There was a single gunshot. No body. Then nothing but the silence of the night.

“Where is he?” I asked myself, knowing the answer already. I had seen the Terminator in action before, but I couldn't believe it was over so fast. There wasn't even a struggle. The bastard just shot him and disappeared into the darkness.

The wind blew through the trees as I made my way cautiously towards Sarah's house. I needed to check on her and make sure she was okay. I reached for my gun, only to find my holster empty. It must have been knocked out of position when we fell off the roof earlier. At least I still had my knife and a six inch blade wouldn't be much good against an exo-skeleton cyborg, but it would have to do for now.

I slowly pressed my back against the side of the house and edged along until I reached one of the windows facing the front yard. There was no movement outside, but that didn't mean anything; if he wanted to, he could be looking right at me and I wouldn't know it until he decided to shoot me too. Slowly, I lifted the corner of the shade with my knife tip, trying not to make any noise or give away my position in any other way that might give him a chance to strike first.

There was a light on inside and I could see Sarah sitting on the couch with Kyle lying in front of her on his back with his arms draped over her knees like he'd fallen asleep that way after making out with her on the couch or something like that. She looked up at me, her face illuminated by the light above her head and said simply: “He's gone” without any emotion at all in her voice ... not sadness ... not anger ... just resignation, like she knew this day would come for as long as she could remember and there was nothing anyone could do about it now except try to live as well as possible after it happened.

“What happened?” I whispered back to her through the window and she just shrugged her shoulders at me like she didn't know or didn't care anymore what had happened or why it had happened or who cared anymore as long as it was done now with Kyle dead and gone forever and everything else we'd planned before would go ahead exactly like we'd planned it before this asshole showed up here tonight and blew Kyle's brains all over your living room floor!

I shook my head angrily at her response, thinking “that isn't how this is supposed to happen!” If Kyle was dead then everything we went through tonight would be wasted effort! Everything that Kyle did tonight was for nothing! Everything Kyle died for tonight was pointless! Everything Kyle died for tonight will never happen! Nothing will ever change! We'll never be able to stop Skynet from being born because Kyle died here tonight doing exactly what we told him to do!

As the weight of the situation pressed down on me, I fought to control the surge of emotions threatening to consume me. Taking a deep breath, I let the reality sink in. Kyle Reese, the man who had traveled back in time to protect Sarah Connor, was gone. And with him, the hope for a better future vanished.

But amidst the darkness that engulfed me, a flicker of determination ignited within my heart. I couldn't let Kyle's sacrifice be in vain. There had to be a way to salvage the situation. A way to ensure that Skynet's creation would be prevented. I had to keep fighting.

I cautiously entered the house, my senses on high alert. Every creak of the floorboards amplified the tension in the air. Sarah sat motionless on the couch, her gaze fixed on a void in the distance. She seemed disconnected from the world, lost in her own thoughts. But I couldn't let her spiral into despair. We needed each other now more than ever.

Stepping closer, I knelt beside her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Sarah," I whispered, my voice filled with urgency, "we can't give up. Kyle wouldn't want that. We have to find a way to stop Skynet together."

Her eyes flickered with a glimmer of determination, a spark of the fire that once burned so brightly in her. Slowly, she turned to face me, her gaze searching for answers. "But how?" she asked, her voice laced with a resolute determination that hadn't been there before.

"We have to go after the Terminator," I replied firmly. "If we can track him down and destroy him, then maybe we can alter the course of history." Despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins, I couldn't ignore the intense sadness that washed over me. Kyle had given his life for this cause, and it only fueled my determination to see it through.

Sarah nodded slowly, her features hardening with resolve. "Alright. Let's find him and end this once and for all." Her voice wasn't just a proclamation, but a vow. A vow to carry on where Kyle had left off.

In that moment, a newfound unity forged between us. We had both lost someone we cared about deeply, yet together, we would honor their memory. It wouldn't be an easy journey, but the burden of responsibility weighed heavily upon us.

With a shared sense of purpose, we gathered our meager supplies and prepared to embark on a treacherous journey. The war against the machines had only just begun, and it was up to us to shape the course of the future.

As we stepped out into the night, a world shrouded in uncertainty and danger awaited us. But with Sarah by my side, I knew that no matter what lay ahead, we would face it together. United in our pursuit to rewrite destiny and change the fate of humanity.

The quest for Kyle Reese's legacy had begun. And I swore to myself, as we disappeared into the darkness, that his sacrifice would not be in vain. I would ensure that the world he fought for became a reality, even if it meant sacrificing everything I had. The Terminator had taken one life, but we would not let it win the war. The battle had only just begun. Once more into the abyss we traveled, armed with hope and a determination that could move mountains.
