"You've got to be fucking kidding me."

"What?" Yu said, his eyes still closed. "It's too early for this. I'm trying to sleep."

"The alarm just went off three minutes ago," she said, looking at the clock on their nightstand. "And it's 6:15; the sun will be up in another hour so you're not going back to sleep."

"Fine," he groaned, rolling over and burying his head under a pillow. "But if you wake me up early again, I'm going to kill you."

She smiled and kissed him on the cheek before getting out of bed. The small two-bedroom apartment was the only place they had left after the war began. It was located in what used to be Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea, but now it was simply called New Seoul by the occupying forces from the Mystik lands to their north. Their army had taken over all of East Asia. It was supposed to be an evacuation center for people when war broke out five years ago - they thought they would be safe here while North Korea and China fought with them - but it was soon occupied by the Mystik forces instead. She didn't know why they were staying here - there was nothing left in Seoul - but they couldn't leave anyway since their passports were revoked when war broke out. Now they lived in what used to be Seoul's Yongsan District, in the middle of a war zone with few supplies and no communication with the outside world.

Looking at her phone, she was surprised by how much service she still had - one bar - although she wasn't sure how long it would last until someone cut off their signal again as punishment for speaking against their ruler or something like that. They probably wouldn't care if there were soldiers living in the same apartment complex as them, but better safe than sorry. A quick scan of her social media accounts revealed that nobody had posted anything about her family's disappearance from Vancouver just yet, which meant she might still have time to try to find them before news of their capture reached North America via satellite transmissions or something like that (she didn't really know how any of this worked). She quickly made some calls and emails before heading into the kitchen and pouring herself a bowl of cereal. When she looked back at Yu, he was still sleeping soundly under his pillow, so she took out her phone again and snapped a picture of him as he slept before heading out into their living room. The rest of their apartment looked normal except for the bullet holes in their walls from stray shots from outside through their windows during combat operations (it happened a lot). She sat down on one of their couches and turned on the television so she could listen for updates about the war without waking Yu up again (he was always cranky when he woke up).

Suddenly she heard a knock on their front door. Her heart froze as she realized that Yu hadn't locked their door last night (he usually did because he knew how dangerous this place could get sometimes), but then she remembered that there shouldn't be anyone else here with them because they were neighbors with only other soldiers living here who couldn't exactly knock on doors either since they'd probably get shot at first by whoever was guarding this place during battle operations or something (she didn't really know how any of this worked either). The knocking continued again as she slowly stood up off of her couch and made a break for her bedroom where she kept her gun in case anyone tried to attack them (it happened a lot). Once inside their room, she quietly shut the door behind her and hid behind it just as another series of knocks sounded from the front door again (Yu really should lock this door next time). She held her gun close to her chest with both hands as she peeked around the door's edge just enough so that she could see whoever was standing outside without being seen herself by whoever it was knocking on her door (this kind of thing happened a lot too). Suddenly there was a loud crash from somewhere outside followed by more knocking on her front door - whoever it was seemed to think someone else lived here instead of just Yu because they kept knocking on his door like crazy - before finally giving up and walking away down the hall past her apartment's front window where they could see whoever it seemed like an officer because of his uniform walking toward an exit around the corner carrying a briefcase under his arm (this also happened a lot). Satisfied that whoever it was had left, she walked back into her apartment where Yu was still asleep under his pillow despite everything that had just happened three feet away from him while he slept peacefully through all of it. She sighed and shook her head before putting away her gun (she really needed to buy some silencers) before making some more coffee for herself after finally waking him up.

She cherished these quiet moments in the morning when it was just the two of them, before the chaos of the day enveloped them. As the coffee machine hissed and sputtered, signaling the brewing of their salvation in a mug, she gazed out of the window, her mind wandering.

The war had stolen so much from them. Their families, their freedom, their sense of security. She tried not to dwell on the memories of Vancouver, the city where they grew up together. The memories of their parents, their friends, their favorite cafes and parks. It had all vanished in the relentless wave of the war's destruction.

She felt a pang of guilt for dragging Yu into her desperate search, for putting his life at risk in the pursuit of reuniting with her family. But she couldn't bear the thought of losing them forever, of never knowing what had happened to them. And so, she persisted.

The television droned on with updates about the frontlines, casualties, and propaganda from the occupying forces. She had learned to navigate the blurred lines between truth and manipulation, her skepticism sharpened by the constant barrage of misinformation.

As the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the room, she took a sip and finally roused Yu from his slumber. He grumbled, blinking away the remnants of dreams, before greeting her with a gentle smile. He was her rock in this desolate landscape, the only certainty she had left.

"I had the weirdest dream," he muttered, rubbing his eyes. "There were flying pigs and talking unicorns. Can you believe that?"

She chuckled, finding solace in their shared laughter. It was moments like these that made their struggle more bearable. She took a sip of her coffee and contemplated her next move. With the mystery of the morning visit, she couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope.

"Yu, something strange happened this morning," she began cautiously, not wanting to overwhelm him with false hope. "There was a man knocking on our door. He seemed important, like an officer or something. And then, I heard a crash, like an explosion, and he just walked away."

Yu's eyebrows furrowed, his curiosity piqued. "Do you think he was trying to find someone? Or maybe he wanted to deliver a message?" his voice was tinged with excitement, a rare emotion in their lives lately.

"I'm not sure," she replied, her mind racing with possibilities. "But I think we should follow him, see if we can find out more."

Yu's eyes widened, a mixture of concern and exhilaration. "Are you sure? It could be dangerous," he warned, his grip tightening around his coffee mug. He was hesitant to leave the relative safety of their apartment.

She placed her hand on his, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "I know it's risky, but we can't keep hiding forever. Maybe this is the break we've been waiting for. We may finally find answers, Yu."

He sighed, realizing the weight of her words. "Alright," he acquiesced, his determination shining through. "Let's do it. Let's find out what's really going on."

As they finished their coffee, they made preparations for their journey outside the confines of their apartment. They packed a small bag, filled with essentials and weapons for protection. In the midst of chaos, they had learned to be resourceful and adaptable, their survival instincts strengthening with each passing day.

As they stood at the door, ready to step out into the unknown, they exchanged one last glance, silently promising to protect one another no matter what. They were just two ordinary people caught in the crossfires of an extraordinary war. But in that moment, they were unyielding symbols of resilience and defiance.

With unwavering determination, they took their first steps towards the truth, their footsteps echoing in the hallways of their war-torn apartment building. They had no idea what lay ahead, but together, they would face whatever challenges came their way. In a world consumed by darkness, they would be the guiding light for one another.
