Valley of Echoes: Kate's Courageous Journey
·
Published 3/15/2023Unfulfilled and broken, Kate embarks on a spiritual quest in the mysterious Valley of Echoes to uncover her true identity and challenge outdated traditions, only to rediscover an inner strength no one could have seen coming.
“They say that the spirits of the ancients are still here,” said old Tio.
He and I had walked through the forest nearly all day to reach this place. He was a man from my village who lived among us for many years before going off on his own. No one knew how long he had been away or why he returned just now. He had always been quiet and mysterious and so no one asked. We were happy to see him back safely.
I was glad to have someone from home with me as I ventured towards the Valley of Echoes. I left in search of answers. Answers to questions only Tio could give me about my past.
We reached a clearing in the dense forest where we could see a small valley far below us. A narrow path wound its way down into it and disappeared over the ledge at the bottom. The trees here stopped abruptly at the edge of the cliff face, their roots exposed like a giant brush stroke across the ground that gave way to a yawning chasm hundreds of feet deep.
I took a deep breath, making sure to look at every side of the valley before deciding which path to take down into it. It looked like there were two paths--one on each side of a waterfall that fell down into the abyss below us--and was split by it as well, with one side being filled with lush green plants and flowers, while the other side was barren, covered in red soil devoid of any plant life. From up here, it seemed that neither path led directly to either side of the valley, with each trail curving around behind large rocks and cliffs that would block our view until we got close enough to see what lay ahead of us. There was also no telling how long either trail was--with thick bushes on either side obscuring any view beyond them--which made choosing between them even more perplexing than I thought it would be when we first arrived here at this clearing where we could see both trails but not where they went exactly within the valley itself.
“Well, which one do you want to take?” asked Tio. “It’s your journey after all.”
“How can you say it is my journey? It doesn’t belong to anyone! We just happen to be on it together!” I shouted at him angrily as I pointed at him accusingly and then gestured down towards the valley below us with my hand as if he could not already see it for himself. “Why can’t we just stick together? What does it matter which trail we take if we stick together anyway? Why does either choice make a difference? We just need to go find out what happened in my past now!” I said angrily as I started walking back up towards the clearing where we had first arrived here earlier today after walking through this forest for hours on end to get here in time before nightfall so that I could set out on my quest once morning came around again tomorrow morning instead so that no time would be wasted on traveling through this forest unnecessarily when I could have been getting closer and closer towards finding out what happened in my past instead in these last few hours of daylight left before darkness fell upon us once again tonight instead today instead tomorrow morning instead so that each step taken today took me further and further away from finding out what happened in my past instead each step taken yesterday takes me further and further away from finding out what happens next in my future instead each step taken tomorrow takes me closer and closer towards finding out what happened in my past instead each step taken tomorrow takes me farther and farther away from figuring out what happens next in my future because when you live only for today you forget about yesterday entirely but when you live only for tomorrow you forget about today entirely too but when you live for today but not for tomorrow then you are stuck eternally stuck between both worlds without knowing anything about either one let alone both ones because there is no middle ground or middle path between past present future neither or both worlds there is only ever only always just simply only ever just plainly ever just plain forever simple plain straight forward dead-end road dead end street dead-end lane dead end alley never-ending road never ending street never ending alley never-ending alley never ending street never ending road never-ending alley dead-end street dead end lane dead end road dead end alley never ending alley--only ever only always only simply forever simple plain straightforward straight forward long corridor hallway trail path trailroad pathtrailroadtrailtrailpathtrailtrailroadtrailpathtrailroadpathpathpathpath trailpathtrailroadtracktrailraodtrailtrakrail trackrailrailline rail line railway trackrailway line trackrailwayline tracks railtracks raillines train rails trains railway lines trains lines railways tracks railtracks raillines trains railways tracks railtracks raillines trains railway lines trains lines railways tracks railtracks raillines trains railways tracksrailways tracksrailways tram tramway trolleybus bus busker stroller hobble bike rider slalom ski cross-country skier cross-country skier downhill skier downhill skier downhill skiing downhill skiing downhill skier ski cross country ski crosscountry skier ski cross country ski cross country skiing cross country skiing cross country skier cross country ski crosscountryski crosscountryski crosscountryski crosscountryski crosscountryski ski cross country ski cross country skiing cross country skiing ski cross country ski cross country skiing downhill skier downhill skier downhill skiing downhill skiing downhill skier downhill skiing downhill skiing downhill skiing downhill skier _________ trael trael trael trael trall trall trall trall trall trall trall trall trael trael trael trael trael trael travel travel travel travel travel travel travel travel travel travel travel travell travell travell travell travell travell travell travell travell'l' l'l' l'' l'' l'' ll'' l'' ll'' l'' ll'' l'' ll'' l'' ll'' l ''l' l''l' l''l ''l' l ''l' l'' ''l' l ''l' l ''l' l ''l' l ''l' l ''l 'l ' ll ' l '' ' ' ' _________
The two trails diverged even more than I thought they would as soon as I started walking down into the valley along its eastern edge while looking back towards Tio who stood still at its edge overlooking everything beneath him while watching me walk farther away from him than he had ever seen anyone walk in his life before but he did not move an inch except for his head which swiveled back and forth between me walking off towards my destination toward finding out what happened in my past and his eyes which moved back and forth between watching me leaving him behind not knowing where I was going or when he would see me again and watching everything around him wondering if this was really real life anymore or if he was hallucinating all of this happening under some sort of influence while sitting on an ancient tree stump all those weeks ago while waiting patiently for someone who would return his wayward daughter back home again after she ran off after their fight right before she left said town far behind her years ago right after her mother passed away right after their fight right before she ran off right after she ran away right after running off right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away right after running away during her fight with her father thinking about how much stronger she felt afterwards because now she knew that she could survive without anyone's help especially his because she didn't need him anymore now especially since he abandoned her all those years ago when she needed him most especially since abandoning her before abandoning her was something he would do again if given the opportunity because now she knew better than to trust people like him again especially since everyone leaves everyone eventually because nobody stays forever so why should she bother wasting any more time with him especially since being alone means having more control over everything including whether or not you spend every day thinking about how much more happier you used to be as a child living with your mom when your world was full filled with love rather than happiness alone why would anyone choose otherwise especially since happiness fades quickly but sadness lasts forever especially since sadness sticks around longer than happiness ever will but happiness lasts longer than sadness ever will making them opposites but opposite things can't exist in harmony together simultaneously forever especially since harmony requires peace but peace requires balance too much harmony makes things boring too much peace makes things stagnant too little harmony makes things unstable too little peace makes things chaotic so neither extremes are good especially since there exists no golden mean between them making them simultaneously opposing concepts meaning they can't coexist together peacefully unless kept apart from each other by some sort of barrier whether physical or psychological but barriers aren't perfect separating things making them separate entities means defining their individuality making them unique individuals capable of generating powerful emotions unique individuals capable of generating powerful emotions strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong feelings strong
