Learning to Soar on Mars: A Journey of Self-discovery by Maria Santos

 Our protagonist is Maria Santos, a brilliant, awkward 16-year-old girl living in São Paulo, Brazil in the 22nd century. She lives a fairly normal teenage life until her parents, who have been transferred to a new Mars Base, announce that she must move to Mars with them in six weeks. Maria is furious and resentful, away with the idea that due to the move, she must leave her friends, home and school behind her. As she struggles to come to terms with her parents' decision, she realises that she must take advantage of the sudden change and inserts herself into a new circle of wealthy and high-profile people, led by the exotic and cosmopolitan Maximillian Peralta. Through her newfound friendships and a keen eye for taking action and grasping opportunities, Maria embarks on a journey of self-discovery, coming out of her shell, learning about worldly pleasures, and eventually facing great life obstacles much grander than she ever envisioned. Told with sardonic humor, the vibrant dialogue in the story reflects Maria's growing confidence as she learns to embrace her environment, rising up to the challenge of her new Mars life.

 After being forced to move to Mars with her parents, sixteen-year-old Maria Santos must rise to the challenges of her new life, find courage within herself, and embrace her new world of wealthy and high-profile friends, in order to make the most out of her transition to life on the Red Planet.



Act 1 - End of the Beginning: The story opens with Maria Santos, a 16-year-old Brazilian girl, being informed that her family is to move to Mars. Unexpectedly uprooted, Maria is angry and resentful at having to leave her friends, home, and school. Her parents try to convince her that living a new life on Mars could be an incredible opportunity and they make plans to transition to the red planet in six weeks.

Act 2 - Midpoint: As their journey to their new home on Mars nears, Maria reluctantly admits that it may be time for her to open her wings and explore. She comes across Maximillian Peralta, a wealthy and high-profile man from Mars, who invites her to a prestigious social gathering on the planet. Though initially intimidated, Maria is amazed to find out that she has more in common with this exotic and cosmopolitan crowd than she had ever expected. She is surprised and thrilled to discover the opportunities in her new environment. Meanwhile, her relationship with her parents also begins to improve.

Act 3 - Crisis: This newfound positivity is shortlived as Maria quickly comes to realize that living on Mars isn’t a picnic. Strapped by the harsh environment and limited resources of the red planet, her everyday tasks become painful and arduous. After an affair with the son of a rival Mars Base colonizer, Maria has her wings sliced off, making it nearly impossible to move around. With every last movement of hers a struggle and every action under intense scrutiny, Maria finds herself defenseless in a place that she had grown to call home.

Act 4 - Climax: Maria feels defeated, agonizing over her lack of power in the Mars Base and her own self-perceived inadequacies. After days of inner debate and agonizing reflection, she eventually realizes that all the power she needs is within herself. Resolving to never give in even if it means taking her own life, Maria summons every ounce of courage to plan an escape from the base, leading an open rebellion against her captors and single-handedly taking on her dark adversaries with her damaged wings and her sheer strength of will. Even when everything seems lost, Maria is able to overcome the worst and finds triumph in the least expected way.
