Isabella's Renaissance: A Journey of Hope and Empowerment
·
Published 2/12/2023In a quest to break the unspoken laws of the early Renaissance and defy prejudice, Isabella the courageous anthropomorphic cat embarks on a journey of self-discovery, experiencing unique obstacles along the way, in order to empower herself to fulfill her ultimate goal.
“I’m going to be the first woman in space,” I told my friend, Maria.
She rolled her eyes, “How?”
“My father is a scientist for the King of Spain. He knows how to build spaceships. And he’s going to teach me.”
“You can't be serious, Isabella. Women aren't allowed in space. It's against the law.”
I frowned and looked at my paws in my lap. Maria had never believed me when I told her about my ambitions to be an astronaut with a mission to Mars. She was just being mean.
I thought again about how happy Father would be when I showed him that I could build a spaceship using the parts from his lab and some spare parts he could buy at the village market down the hill. I was so excited that I couldn't stay still any longer. I jumped up and ran around the room, "I'm going to do it! I'm going to be the first cat in space!"
Maria watched me spin around in circles and shake my tail like a flag in the wind. Then she sat up straight, "Isabella," she said as she placed her paw on my shoulder, "why don't you go with your mother today?"
"What?" I stopped spinning and sat down on my haunches next to my best friend. My tail hung limp between my legs as if it had lost all its energy along with me. Today was market day and Mother would need help carrying our vegetables back home after she sold them at the market place. It seemed like another boring day ahead of me until Father invited me into his lab after lunch and taught me how to solder wires together – something no other cat had ever done before! Now Maria wanted me to help Mother carry rocks? Ugh!
"Mother can carry her own rocks," I said through gritted teeth, hoping Maria would get the point and leave me alone today so I could practice soldering wires again for Father's spaceship project tomorrow.
"No, you misunderstand," Maria said with a smile on her face as she stroked my head with her paw like Mother does when she thinks I've been very good. "Your mother wants you to do something special with her today."
