Seeking Answers: Jitka and Andrew's Conspiracy Stuggle
·
Published 5/31/2023Brash Czech-born computer hacker Jitka must battle dangerous forces to discover the truth of her missing sister's disappearance and potentially rewrite history in this intense international conspiracy thriller.

Jitka.
Andrew.
I wish I could see her face one more time. I wish she was here with me now.
But all I have is this note, and the memory of her hands holding mine as we ran through the streets of Prague.
I was so young then, naive and stupid with love.
Now all I have are these memories and a handful of clues that she left behind—the remnants of her work and research, fragments of our life together, now scattered across Europe.
My sister Lina was a brilliant programmer, among the best in Europe. The government recruited her to help them build their own private digital database, to keep their secrets safe from foreign agencies and hackers alike. But somewhere along the way, something went wrong—the project stalled and the top brass at the Ministry withdrew Lina from her work. Her last message to me said that she had found a way to break into the database and find out what was in it—but then she disappeared from Prague without a trace.
And now, by some miracle, I've found Andrew again. He's an American now, working for some Internet security firm in Berlin—he's just passing through Prague on his way home from a business trip when I run into him at a bar near my flat. We catch up for a bit but before long I start to tell him about my sister—and he tells me that he has information about her disappearance too. Before long he's ordered another round of drinks and we're heading over to his hotel room to sit down at his laptop and have a look at what he's got.
It turns out that Andrew had contacts in the US government too—he was part of some Intelligence program out at Stanford while we were there together at college back in California—so he knows people who know people who know other people who know shit about shit that happens in Europe. They call it Information Sharing these days but really it's just another name for Spying—hacking into your neighbours' data to find out what they're doing behind closed doors, trying to get access to their secrets even if you can't trust them enough to share yours in return. So somehow Andrew managed to get access to all sorts of files about my sister's disappearance—he shows me all kinds of classified documents about how Lina disappeared from Prague several years ago, how Interpol got involved but couldn't find any trace of her whereabouts...and how someone else apparently died instead in a car crash not long after my sister went missing. A woman named Anna Klammer whose fingerprints matched those on file for Lina but whose DNA did not match any samples taken from my family or from anyone else who knew Lina well back home in Brno or anywhere else where she might have lived or worked since childhood. The police said it was an accident but they never explained why someone would try to pass off someone else's corpse as Anna Klammer's if not because Anna Klammer herself had died somewhere else entirely before she could be identified by anyone who knew her personally...unless someone wanted everyone who knew Anna Klammer well enough to recognize her body properly dead too. But how could anyone do something like that? And why? Where was Lina? What happened to my sister? Was she still alive? Did she die along with this Anna Klammer woman whose identity no one seems able to explain? Did they ever meet each other? Did they ever even exist at all? Or are they both just figments of someone's imagination? Did I imagine my entire relationship with Lina based on nothing more than lies and fantasies concocted by shadowy agents working for politicians with agendas that no-one understands anymore? Why did Lina disappear? And where did she go? Who killed Anna Klammer if not Lina herself? And why can't anyone prove whether either woman even existed in the first place? Without any answers, without any real proof that anything is what it seems...how can I find my sister now? How can I even begin to start looking for her when everything I believed about her life has been thrown into doubt by these rumours and conjectures about two women who might or might not be Lina, who might or might not even be dead at all but only presumed dead because no-one can say for certain whether they ever existed in the first place...or whether they were just figments of someone else's imagination being used against us by agents whose identities are unknown...?
