Lost in the Colors of Antigua

"I think it's time we finally go our separate ways," said Verena.

Sebastian stood in silence, looking at the ground.

"It's not that I don't want to see you any longer," she continued, "but for the past two months we've been travelling together, and I think it's time we... well... start living our own lives."

Sebastian nodded slowly and looked up. "So what are you going to do now?" he asked.

"Well, Martin is waiting for me in Antigua. He's taken a job there and he needs my help in getting settled."

Martin had recently left them to visit some friends back home in Germany, but had promised to meet them again in Guatemala City before their journey ended. This was one of his first and last promises that he would keep.

"But what about you? What are you going to do?" Sebastian asked Verena. "Will you return to your studies?"

Verena smiled momentarily, then replied: "No, I'm not going back to school." She paused for a moment, staring at Sebastian with a look of longing on her face. "Sebastian, I want us to be together." A few tears began to stream down her cheeks.

Sebastian suddenly felt uncomfortable being in her presence any longer. He took a step back from her and started walking towards the shoreline of Atitlan lake where they were standing. Suddenly he felt weightless as if he were floating above the ground. He looked around for a moment before looking down at his feet; below him was the lake surface with fish swimming beneath him--he was no longer on land! He desperately tried to find something to grab onto but found nothing; taking a deep breath he dived into the water below him and began swimming towards the surface gasping for air when he broke through into the open air again.

When he had caught his breath again he looked around him while treading water. He suddenly realized that both Verena and Martin were nowhere to be seen; they had disappeared leaving him alone in the middle of Lake Atitlan! His heart sank as more tears streamed down his face.

His mind raced with a flurry of thoughts. How could they leave him like this? Was it all a dream? As his head spun with confusion, the reality of his situation began to sink in. Sebastian was stranded in the middle of a vast lake, unsure of how to get back to shore.

Desperation kicked in, propelling him to swim aimlessly in search of a glimmer of land. But with each stroke, exhaustion took its toll on his body. Panic settled in as the realization dawned that he might not make it back to safety. Fear gripped him, clinging to his limbs like an invisible weight.
