"Love is a many splendored thing," my mother would always say.

"For most it is fleeting. For others, eternal."

She was referring to her love for my father and the unbreakable bond that held their marriage together for nearly three decades.

They were inseparable in life, and by all accounts, they have remained so in death. My father tells me stories of them being seen dancing together in the afterlife, his hand firmly on her waist as they spin and twirl in a world of white light.

I wonder if I will ever feel that way about someone. My parents might be an example of what is possible, but they are also an example of what is not likely to happen. The odds aren't great when you're born to a father who claims to have been a highwayman in the 17th century and a mother who was a witch during the Middle Ages. Despite how you might imagine such things, our marriage wasn't exactly welcomed by mainstream society. And that was just the beginning of things getting difficult for us.

My name is Rori Windyfoot, and I grew up on the moors of northern England with my mother, Eira Weatherwitch. A legend among her kind, she had lived for over seven centuries and had witnessed multiple dynasties rise and fall. Her memories from these eras often felt distant and fragmented, like hazy dreams difficult to recall once awakened.

Our home was at the top of a hill overlooking the grandest valley in all the moors where we could see for miles around. It rained more than half the year, but we had plenty of firewood to keep warm when it did get cold outside. Our home was well-stocked with provisions, entertainment, and my mother's woven creations made from willow branches and seasonal flowers.

The only thing we lacked was human companionship other than each other. We did befriend a magical creature named Jackalope who lived under our house and provided us with company. He resembled an antelope, but had the ears of a jackrabbit and the antlers of a deer.

We occasionally ventured into town to buy supplies or visit fellow witches living further away. These visits were brief due to the potential danger for my mother if the government discovered she was still alive. We had to practice magic discreetly as it was forbidden on Earth, a world that had long since forgotten its magical past.

Although life could sometimes feel mundane in our mostly ordinary world, I hoped to find someone someday who would fight for our love against any challenges we might face. I have been searching for a connection that will stand the test of time and adversity, much like the bond between my parents.

My mother's stories of courtship from ancient times enrapture me, as they illustrate a greater level of courage and dedication than what is commonly seen today. Despite my longing for this type of connection, I am forced to confront the realities of the present, where love frequently seems fleeting and uncertain. Nevertheless, I continue to hold onto hope that someday, I will find a love that endures even the most impossible odds, and experience the kind of eternal love that my mother spoke of so passionately.
