I had always thought Jace was a little crazy, but that was exactly why I liked him.

I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes, letting the warm breeze of the early summer evening wash over me. The sun had set a few moments ago, and the temperature was cooling down. It would soon be time to go on duty, but I could still relax for a bit longer.

Jace's voice broke into my thoughts. "Hey Lila, you got time for another game before we have to get ready?" His voice sounded slightly muffled as he spoke into his phone, standing at the edge of the porch with his back turned to me.

"Sure thing Jace." I took off my headphones and stood up from where I'd been lounging. "It's your serve."

He turned around from where he'd been leaning against the railing of his porch, grinning at me as I walked over to the table where he was sitting. He moved his beer bottle out of the way so that we could play the next round.

I slid into the seat opposite him, putting on my headphones again as I picked up my paddle and made a face at him. "You know I hate being on defense," I said through my music. He just grinned wider and sat up straighter in his chair, bouncing his paddle lightly in his hands.

The first point was his as usual - he did have more experience at this than I did - but I managed to hold him off at the end to take it by one point instead of two. We each took a drink of our beer and then started the next game. This time it was my turn to win by one point after an exciting final rally; I started feeling better about my chances in this third match as well. He started with a strong serve to start this game as well, but this time instead of returning it on my side of the table he just lobbed it back over my head towards the far corner of the porch where there were no walls behind me for me to hit against. When I ran around the corner after it without thinking about what might be waiting for me there, he gave a little laugh and threw himself down onto me from behind, catching me in an unbreakable bear hug from behind as he pinned me down on top of one of his huge arms while using the other hand to steal away my paddle from me and drop it onto the floor beside us before also reaching over to turn off my music.

"Got you!" he exclaimed victoriously into my ear, still laughing quietly as he tightened his grip on me even further in triumph. "I've been waiting all day for you to play into that one! Now you're mine!" His voice rose in volume as he spoke until finally he let out a deep bellow full of laughter which rang out across both our porches and made some people walking past look over to see what all the noise was about while they walked their dogs or carried their groceries home from work or whatever else they were doing tonight like normal people who don't live like us firemen do who spend our lives surrounded by loud noises and sirens going off all over town every day until it seems like nothing anymore because we simply get used to living that way after a while even though most ordinary people who aren't firemen don't have anything like that in their lives at all at least not that they have to live with every day forever and ever amen which is why they can't understand how we do it because nobody would be able to stand having that kind of life forever unless they were crazy which is what makes us firemen different so that's why we can do things like this which is fun except sometimes maybe when somebody comes home early form work because they forgot something or maybe they got fired today or maybe their wife left them today or maybe their mom died today or their boyfriend cheated on them today or something else bad happened to them today which means that now when someone comes home early from work who doesn't know about our game which has been running for years now except for how if somebody came home early from work then they would think something really terrible must have happened because sometimes those things happen especially when you live near an airport like we do which means sometimes planes crash here which is why we practice things like this so we can rescue people like you see here with me right now except for how if somebody came home early from work then they would think something really terrible must have happened because sometimes those things happen especially when you live near an airport like we do which means sometimes planes crash here which is why we practice things like this so we can rescue people like you see here with me right now except for how it would be scary if someone came home early from work because that wouldn't make any sense except maybe if it was your birthday or something which maybe would mean that somebody remembered your birthday except sometimes people forget birthdays too so maybe that wouldn't make sense either except maybe if somebody forgot your birthday then once you explained it to them then they would understand what had happened and why I'm holding you down here against your will right now except...well...actually...hold on...let's take a moment here..." He trailed off distractedly; still holding onto me tightly with one arm while reaching down to pick up his longneck bottle only inches away from us both lying flat on our stomachs facing each other as we were without moving much apart from him having scooted forward closer towards me whilst speaking into space now trying unsuccessfully to find some purchase against either side of us where he could push himself upright again without dropping himself entirely onto me instead of just half-on-half-off as he was now finding out now that suddenly seemed much more preferable but also oh-so-much-less-stable than previously appeared."Hmmmmm," he mused aloud thoughtfully as staring intently down between us both seeing things only visible through his own eyes I'm guessing since neither myself nor indeed anybody else could see anything there at all not even perhaps air itself since air tends not exist unless there's some kind of solid object there directly underneath it interceding between said air and said solid object (like myself) thereby necessitating said solid object needing therefore some way of existing under air so therefore existing interpenetrating said air rather than just standing there unsupported making no sense whatsoever unlike firemen who are apparently allowed by God himself (if such a thing exists) to exist both inside air along with everything else therein AND also outside air above said objects (like myself) causing everybody else who isn't fireman including all religious types themselves thus causing said religious types great consternation amongst themselves wondering how this can possibly be happening when clearly a being capable of existing inside air itself almost certainly must not exist anywhere at all except inside air itself meaning thus that firemen must cease immediately trying to rescue anybody's life because clearly you should just stay alive somewhere safe underground somewhere far away from any fires because otherwise you'll die because obviously if somebody exists inside air itself then they definitely won't exist anywhere else including anywhere above air itself which would explain why they never seem able to help people in normal situations whereby nobody else can help either since apparently nobody ever sees these guys doing anything useful other than being idiots only making stupid games like this one right now meaning also probably explaining why these same firemen are also responsible whenever planes crash nearby causing everybody including religious types themselves much consternation whilst wondering how exactly such an occurrence could possibly have occurred given how obviously nobody saw these same firemen doing anything useful other than playing stupid games when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful when planes crashed nearby since obviously nobody saw them doing anything useful..." Somewhere along his rambling monologue Mr Jace had fully passed out on top of myself; sweating heavily drooling copiously leaving lovely wet spots all over my shirt as various streams run together pooling up under us both creating nice moist spots conducive thankfully NOT with inner body heat dissipation but rather unfortunately with spreading body heat outwardly throughout surrounding environment therefore increasing temperature unpleasantly rapidly potentially leading eventually in worst case scenario if present conditions continue unabated towards severe hyperthermia amongst those present necessitating immediate evacuation efforts needed due [to] aforementioned severe hyperthermia among those present including present self which is yet another reason not always very helpful given aforementioned wetness causing definite problems for self due [to] extreme levels difficulty remaining conscious within same given situation despite continued presence supposed friend Mr Jace helping keep self awake BUT yet problem remains persisting notwithstanding fact Mr Jace currently unconscious upon self thus unable/unwilling remediate same regardless any efforts self might make thus necessitating once more imminent requirement evacuation efforts due [to] aforementioned severe hyperthermia amongst those present including present self requiring immediate aid assistance assistance assistance assistance assistance assistance..."
