The van bumped along the dirt road, the sound of the engine a constant hum in the air. Cobb sat in the passenger seat, staring out at the barren landscape. The mission had not gone as planned. Fischer had been more resistant than they anticipated, and their time was running out.

Beside him, Ariadne fidgeted with her pen, her eyes focused on her sketchbook. She had been quiet since they left the compound, lost in thought.

"What are you thinking about?" Cobb asked.

Ariadne looked up at him, her brow furrowed. "I'm just... trying to figure out where we went wrong."

Cobb sighed and leaned back in his seat. "It's not your fault, Ariadne. This job is… difficult."

"I know," she said softly. "But I can't help but feel like there's something I could have done differently. Something I missed."

Cobb reached over and placed a hand on her arm. "You did everything you could," he said reassuringly. "We all did."

Ariadne nodded but didn't say anything. She turned her attention back to her sketchbook and began to draw again.

As they drove on, Cobb's mind wandered back to Mal. He couldn't help but think of her, especially now that they were so close to completing the mission.

He glanced at Arthur in the rearview mirror, then turned to Ariadne. "Can you give us a moment?"

Ariadne looked up at him, surprised by his request. "Uh... sure." She gathered her things and moved to the back of the van.

Cobb waited until she was out of earshot before speaking again. "Arthur... I need to know something."

Arthur raised an eyebrow at him but didn't say anything.

"Did you tell Ariadne about Mal?"

Arthur sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "No. But she figured it out on her own."

Cobb's eyes widened in surprise. "How?"

Arthur shrugged. "I don't know. She's... perceptive, I guess."

Cobb frowned and looked back at Ariadne, who was now engrossed in her sketchbook again. "What does she want?"

Arthur hesitated for a moment before answering. "She wants to be with Mal."

Cobb felt a knot tighten in his chest. He turned back to Arthur, his voice low and urgent. "We can't let that happen, Arthur. You know what she's capable of."

Arthur nodded grimly. "I know."

Cobb leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes, trying to calm the rising panic inside him.

A few minutes later, they arrived at their destination: an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.

They gathered their things and made their way inside, where Yusuf was waiting for them.

"Are we ready?" Cobb asked.

Yusuf nodded and led them to a small room at the back of the warehouse.

Inside, they found Fischer strapped into a chair, wires attached to his temples.

Cobb took a deep breath and stepped forward, ready to begin the final phase of the mission.

But as he reached out to touch Fischer's forehead, he felt a hand on his arm.

He turned to see Ariadne standing beside him, her eyes filled with determination.

"I'm sorry," she said softly.

Before Cobb could react, Ariadne pulled out a small device from her pocket and pressed a button.

Suddenly, everything went black.
