The Dueling Cosmos: Alex and Corey's Lipstick Quest
·
Published 4/4/2023Alex and Corey, two astronauts of conflicting beliefs, investigate a mysterious lipstick-covered plastic tube in a space station, but as they unlock its secrets and confront their differences, a sinister fate awaits that could cost them their lives.
Alex and I met at the International Space Training Centre in Morocco. They'd given us a week to get to know each other, but it was already obvious that we would be great friends. We'd both been through years of training, followed by years of further training, before finally getting our lucky break in the lottery. The two of us were going to be the first ever Muslim-Christian team to fly together.
We quickly became inseparable - as much for our shared sense of humour as for our joint faith. We'd been on so many missions together that we could have worn matching jumpsuits without anyone noticing. But this mission, I had a feeling, was going to be different.
"I'm telling you," said Alex, "It's just a piece of plastic."
"It's not just plastic," I replied. "The lipstick has faded, but the tube is still intact. It's not something you find in space."
Alex looked up at me and frowned. "You're right," he said, as if he were waking from a deep sleep. He stood up sharply and marched over to the window, where he stared out across the International Space Station's solar panels. "It's an Earth woman!" he exclaimed suddenly, as if struck by a realization. "We've got an Earth woman on board!"
I joined him at the window and stared out across the vast expanse of space, towards Earth below us and beyond that towards nothingness itself: infinite darkness surrounding us like a blanket twisting itself around us as if we were being embraced by a divine force. Alex tapped his fingers impatiently against the glass as he waited for my answer. Finally, I turned away from the window and faced him directly.
"So what do we do?" I asked him slowly. My voice was calm and measured - which was unusual for me when talking about women - but I was trying to keep myself under control so Alex wouldn't think he'd been right all along about how crazy I was being about this whole thing.
Alex shrugged his shoulders and adopted a contemplative look. "We need to approach this situation cautiously," he proposed. "We're in uncharted territory." Our past experiences with women, he reminded me, had been fraught with misunderstanding and confusion. On Mars, there were few women to interact with - save for Barbara, the android who served us coffee during our breaks at Mission Control. She had the appearance of a woman but lacked human characteristics, such as emotions or physical traits like breasts. Despite this, Alex and I found it difficult not to be drawn to her due to her endearing demeanor.
Together, we decided that in order to maintain our focus on the mission, we needed to distance ourselves from any emotional entanglements or distractions. We were determined not to jeopardize our friendship or professional relationship over Earth women whom we barely knew. To achieve this, we acknowledged that open communication and transparency would be crucial going forward.
With a mutual nod of agreement, we resumed our duties on the International Space Station, vowing not to let any perceived oddities or tempting mysteries detract from our ultimate goal: completing our mission and returning safely to Earth.
