Alice and the Underground Quest
·
Published 3/11/2023Alice, an Indian-English hacker, must brave the perils of London's gritty underworld and overcome her identity struggles in order to beat the illegal underground computer game tournament and save her home city.
A.J. sat at his computer, gazing at the screen that was now illuminated with a black and white picture of an old building. White lettering above it read: "Pembroke College, Cambridge University."
A.J. stared at it, while his other hand furiously worked the keyboard. His fingers were moving faster than the speed of light, but to him, they moved in slow motion. He was only one keystroke away from hacking into the Pembroke College's server. A final hit on the enter button, and he'd be all set.
"Come on…" he muttered under his breath.
His heart started beating faster as he heard a click on his headphones. He quickly removed them from his ear and replaced them over the microphone attached to his headset. He pressed the talk button and said, "This is mission control, we have a signal."
He waited for a couple of seconds before he heard Tara's voice in his headset. "Roger that mission control." She paused for a moment before continuing," We have a visual on target."
A smile began to grow on A.J.'s face as he saw that she had found Pembroke's website – or more specifically, their homepage . All of a sudden, the background image on her screen changed to one of a small group of men in robes and gowns posing for a group photograph in front of Pembroke's famous gatehouse building. "Tara?" A.J. spoke up nervously," you there? What happened?"
"Ugh… I don't know man," came Tara's muffled reply through A.J.'s headphones," It just changed again." She sounded frustrated now," Hold on." There was some more silence before Tara spoke up again," Okay I think I got it! It looks like they've got some kind of events page on here!"
"That's great!" A.J responded eagerly," Can you see if there are any tournaments being played? Anything with 'Game' or 'Competition' in its title?"
"Yeah hold on…." More silence followed before she said excitedly," Bingo!" She then began reading out loud from the website, "The annual Game Theory Society Quiz Night will be held at 7pm this Friday 31st March in New Court Hall."
