Avia and Mark's Mythopoetia
·
Published 3/17/2023Just as college student Mark's long-lost crush, Avia, reconnects with him, an ancient God obstructs their already fragile relationship, challenging them with a perilous quest requiring heroic insight and courage — will their unwavering bond outlast the fierce obstacles or fall victim to defying this mythopoetia?
The most intriguing thing about me is my name. It's a two syllable, two vowel, two consonant name. It's the only thing I have that's unique, and it makes me easy to remember.
My parents named me Mark in a world where one of the most common names was Jonathon. They picked it because they knew that it would be uncommon in the future. It was their way of ensuring I'd never be forgotten. That I would always stand out from the crowd.
I don't know if it worked. I'm sure people forget about me sometimes. We met for coffee today, for example. We've been best friends since high school, but she never remembers my name anymore! She always calls me Markus or Markus or something else weird like that. It was so embarrassing when our other friend had to jump in and correct her! And then she called him Marc too!
I'm not being fair though. People can't help it if they forget things sometimes, right? I mean, we're all getting old, so memory loss will happen no matter what happens. And besides, she did recognize me when we first sat down at the table! She said "Mark!" and gave me a hug. She even remembered how much she liked my name! That was nice of her to do that.
We talked about our jobs and families and stuff like that until we got around to talking about our favorite subject: movies! We used to watch them together all the time back when we were in college. We would get stoned as hell and just watch movie after movie on Netflix until we passed out from exhaustion.
"I watched Interstellar recently," I told her as I sipped my coffee through a straw, "and holy shit what a good movie."
"Oh yeah?" Avia replied with a smile on her face, "Did you cry at the end?"
"No," I admitted, "but only because I didn't want to ruin my eyeliner."
Avia laughed and rolled her eyes as she had done hundreds of times before when we used to talk about movies and makeup together as kids. The sound made me feel nostalgic for those days when life wasn't so glum anymore. When she was still alive, our relationship was one of closeness and cooperation more than friendship or romance. We understood each other well because we were both women struggling with the idea of womanhood in different ways; she had always been proud of her gender while I struggled with self-confidence issues due to persistent bullying by some classmates who were jealous of my intelligence over theirs.
But now there was a rift between us like there hadn't been previously between us ever before; it was a rift created after Avia got married last year during graduation weekend at our 20th high school reunion party. She had caught up with an old boyfriend from high school who also happened to be married but separated from his wife at this point in his life for reasons unknown to us; he had moved away from home shortly after graduation without telling anyone where he had gone or why he had left home so suddenly without any warning whatsoever. But he had returned from exile during our reunion party last year - after finding a new job and buying a new house - to see Avia again after twenty years of silence between them; they ended up connecting again immediately upon seeing each other at the party (as friends) while everyone else was busy having fun dancing together or drinking beers together or smoking weed together or whatever else people do at these kind of parties. They ended up spending most of the night together talking about their lives since graduation and ended up sleeping together for the first time after having sex in his car outside of her apartment building later that night before parting ways once again forever without telling anyone where he had gone off too or why he had left home so suddenly without any warning whatsoever that time either... except this time he actually decided to tell Avia where he was going next time instead of leaving her wondering whether or not she'd ever hear from him again ever again! A few weeks later they were dating again secretly behind everyone else's backs once again after finding each other online through social media and meeting up for coffee several times before deciding to tie the knot soon afterwards at her apartment building on what had been their twentieth anniversary celebration weekend together; they ended up having sex again in his car outside of her apartment building later that night before parting ways once again forever without telling anyone where they were going next time instead of leaving everyone else wondering whether or not they'd ever hear from them again ever again! A few weeks later they were planning their wedding weekend together secretly behind everyone else's backs once again after finding each other online through social media and meeting up for coffee several times before deciding to tie the knot soon afterwards inside the same apartment building on what had been their twentieth anniversary celebration weekend together; they ended up having sex again in his car outside of her apartment building long enough after parting ways once again forever without telling anyone where they were going next time instead of leaving everyone else wondering whether or not they'd ever hear from them again ever again! A few weeks later they were planning their honeymoon trip together secretly behind everyone else's backs once again after finding each other online through social media and meeting up for coffee several times before deciding to tie the knot soon afterwards inside their new house bought earlier that month on what had been their twenty-first anniversary celebration weekend together; they ended up having sex again in his car outside of their new house bought earlier that month long enough after parting ways once again forever without telling anyone where they were going next time instead of leaving everyone else wondering whether or not they'd ever hear from them again ever again! A few weeks later they were trying hard to make a baby together secretly behind everyone else's backs once again after finding each other online through social media and meeting up for coffee several times before deciding to tie the knot soon afterwards inside their new house bought earlier that month on what had been their twenty-second anniversary celebration week together; they ended up having sex outside after parting ways once more forever without telling anyone where they were going next time instead of leaving everyone else wondering whether or not they'd ever hear from them again ever again! A few weeks later Avia announced "It's happening!" via text message meant for just herself (meaning: "I think I'm pregnant") instead of sending it out as intended (meaning: "I think I'm pregnant!"), which led her husband into calling both his mother in law ("Where are you?") and father in law ("Where are you?") at separate times during work hours asking each parent individually ("Where is Avia? Has she gone missing?") while forgetting who his own father even is ("What is your name?"). After receiving no answer - both parents didn't respond back immediately because nobody answers phone calls while working these days - his paranoia grew worse ("Where are you?! Why aren't you answering?!"). He didn't know what to say to his coworkers ("Why should I care?") when asked why he sounded so upset lately ("What does it matter?"). He didn't know how to explain himself ("Why should I worry?"), but nevertheless managed to explain himself regardless ("You should really show some concern.") whenever someone started asking questions ("Why haven't you heard anything from your daughter yet? Is everything okay?"). This continued throughout every day morning till evening till night ("How could this happen?!"), until finally one late night afternoon ("Have you found them yet?!"), he received an unexpected call from his sister via telephone ("I have news.") announcing quite unexpectedly ("They're fine.") that Avia was pregnant after all ("They're pregnant!") despite how impossible this may seem considering how unlikely it is for two adults so young in age like them - especially ones who have only known each other for two years total - could possibly have already procreated properly (like adults!) considering how difficult it is even just convincing society at large that such an outcome could possibly occur naturally (even among adults!) let alone being considered entirely possible (by non-adults!) considering how far fetched such an idea seems even under ideal circumstances (to non-adults!).
