The Forum In Rome:
"Wait! What is this?" Astrid asked in surprise as she walked into the center of the Forum where she'd arranged to meet Lucius after he stole some apples from one of their vendors late last night. They had agreed to rendezvous near the Temple of Juno, which had been closed since Caesar Augustus took over as Pontifex Maximus a few weeks ago following his victory against Marc Antony. There were whispers that the new emperor's wife, Livia Drusilla, and her allies orchestrated the poisoning of Antony's former wife, Cleopatra VII, to prevent any conflict regarding the succession to power. Regardless, Rome seemed to be stable under Caesar Augustus' reign, despite the ruler approaching his seventies.
Astrid scanned the area for Lucius, growing concerned about his tardiness. She soon found him, unceremoniously tumbling face-first onto the grass, an apple clutched in each hand. Close behind him was Adelina, also carrying two apples, flanked by the wreckage of what appeared to have once been a cage on wheels for transporting goods. Clearly, something unexpected had occurred in their apple heist.
"What happened?" Astrid asked in astonishment as she bent down next to Lucius and began untying him, while Adelina put down her apples and started freeing herself from the strange contraption they were entangled in. As they worked hurriedly to release themselves from their bonds, a series of unfortunate events unfolded: Adelina accidentally bumped into Lucius, causing him to tumble backward and Astrid to lose her balance; Adelina reached out to catch Astrid but instead caused Lucius to fall face-first into Astrid's chest, knocking them both to the ground. Meanwhile, Adelina landed with a thump beside them, still clutching her side from the earlier collision.
Confused and disoriented, the three of them lay on the grass, staring at the sky and wondering what had just happened. The apples scattered around them, their original mission now seeming quite trivial compared to the chaos that had ensued.
As the dust settled and the throbbing pain in their various body parts subsided, Astrid, Lucius, and Adelina slowly gathered their wits. Astrid was the first to regain her composure, pulling herself up from the grass with a groan.
"Well, that went just swimmingly," she muttered sarcastically, smoothing out her tunic and brushing off the dirt. Lucius and Adelina were still lying on the ground, moaning in response to her comment.
"Help me up, would you?" Lucius grumbled, reaching out a hand toward Astrid. She obliged, pulling him to his feet, albeit unsteadily, causing them both to stumble again.
Adelina managed to sit up, cradling her side which was now adorned with a rather impressive bruise. She gazed at the wreckage of the cage and sighed. "I can't believe I let that thing hit me. It practically destroyed the apples we risked our lives for!"
Lucius huffed, glaring at the scattered apples. "Well, at least we didn't get caught by the guards. Or worse, Livia's goons."
Astrid nodded, her eyes scanning the surroundings warily. "True. We should count ourselves lucky. But now what? We've got nothing to show for our efforts."
As they pondered their next move, a voice interrupted their conversation. "You know, you three could use a bit of assistance." Startled, they turned to see a middle-aged man standing a few feet away, a sly grin playing at the corners of his lips.
"Who are you?" Adelina demanded, a hint of suspicion in her tone.
The man chuckled, raising an eyebrow. "Let's just say I have some connections in high places. And it seems you could all use a little bit of luck."
Astrid exchanged a glance with Lucius, their curiosity piqued. "What do you mean?"
The man stepped closer, leaning against the broken cage. "I might know someone who can help you retrieve those apples. Someone who can make sure Livia's lackeys won't give you any trouble. Of course, it comes at a price. But it's a small fee in exchange for your peace of mind, don't you think?"
Adelina eyed him suspiciously, but the idea of finally getting their hands on the stolen apples was too tantalizing to resist. "What exactly do you want in return?"
The man's grin widened, revealing a flash of gold as he reached into his cloak and withdrew a small parchment. "Only a tiny favor, really. A simple task that involves retrieving an ancient relic from a nearby temple. Nothing more, nothing less."
Lucius crossed his arms, a skeptical look on his face. "And what guarantee do we have that you won't leave us high and dry, just like our failed apple heist?"
The man's smile remained unwavering. "I'll be there every step of the way, guiding you, ensuring your success. You have my word."
Astrid glanced at her companions, a flicker of excitement dancing in her eyes. "Well, it seems we don't have much choice, do we? We could use all the help we can get."
Slowly, the trio nodded in agreement, their minds made up. With their new acquaintance leading the way, they set off toward the temple, their focus shifting from apples to an ancient relic that held the promise of not only adventure but also a chance at redemption. Little did they know that their decision would plunge them into a web of deceit, danger, and secrets that would test not only their wits but also their loyalty to one another.
As they ventured deeper into the labyrinth of the temple, their footsteps echoing through the dimly lit corridors, they could only hope that their newfound alliance would prove to be the key to their success. For in the heart of this ancient sanctuary, they would come face to face with a destiny far grander than any stolen apples or petty heists. And their lives would never be the same.
