Break Free of Fear

I was 16 years old when my world changed. What started out as a normal day quickly turned into what I never thought would be possible in real life. My mother had just been killed and my father was being arrested for her murder. The police officer's words were still ringing in my head, "Elizabeth, your father is being taken away for murder."

I didn't know what to think or do. I felt like I had lost all control of my life. My dad took the blame for my mom's murder, but he didn't commit the murder. He was protecting me from an abusive stepfather who thought himself above the law. My dad couldn't stand to see him hurting us anymore, so he did what my mom said if anything happened to her, "If anything happens to me, run with Cora." So that's what we did, we ran as far away as we could get to protect each other.

We finally found safety and refuge at an orphanage in New York City. It was here that we met our new family who took us in and helped us through everything that had happened. I loved this place and the people who lived here with me. We were a small family of five children and three adults who lived together as one big happy family.

There were two sets of adoptive parents - mine and Cora's, and our foster parents - Monica and Mr. Thompson, who ran the orphanage. Because of them, Cora and I got to live together under their care and protection until we could get back on our feet again and find our own way in life. They had really helped us through some tough times during the past few years, especially after my father's arrest and subsequent death sentence, but they were determined to keep us safe from any further harm.

Cora and I met Mr. Thompson while he came to visit us in our room one night after dinner in order to tell us some bad news about his job situation; he no longer had a job since his boss had decided to close down his business right before the Christmas season was due to begin. This meant that Mr. Thompson wouldn't be able to afford his rent payment for December, which meant that he wouldn't be able to pay for our living expenses either during that month; including food, shelter, and clothes for us all, as well as any medical needs that might arise later on down the road without proper medical insurance coverage from him or his wife, who worked part-time as a nurse at a local hospital nearby.

This news was very serious and made us all nervous about the future prospects of our home staying open with no money coming in from any of its residents any more than we already needed just for living expenses. We were also worried about other costs, such as medical bills or unexpected repairs, that could threaten the safety and well-being of everyone in the orphanage.

Cora suggested that we ask Monica if she could help us look after the kids while Monica worked her shift at the hospital nearby so Cora could pitch our idea about taking care of her kids first by herself tomorrow morning after breakfast when everyone else goes off into town when she gets off work from her own job at the diner near town square where she waits tables full-time every day serving customers drinks and food whenever she isn't working there cleaning floors at night during her shift before going home afterward. Monica would then go home after work is done for the day where she will cook dinner for everyone when everyone comes back home again, just like every night, usually working late into the evening, only stopping once everyone gets home safely so she can tuck them into bed safely without having any problems with any bad guys showing up later on bothering them while they sleep unknowingly undisturbed while she keeps watch over them together with her husband across town preventing anyone from entering their house unnoticed while they are asleep upstairs.
