Published 11/28/2023Cobb stared at the spinning top on the table, his mind racing. The truth was finally sinking in, and it felt like a punch to the gut. He had been so sure of himself, so confident in his abilities as an extractor and dream architect. But now everything was crumbling around him.
"How...how is this possible?" Cobb stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.
Mal stood before him, her expression cold and calculating. "You were always so easy to manipulate, darling," she said with a smirk. "All I had to do was make you believe what I wanted you to believe."
Cobb's head was spinning. He couldn't process what he was hearing. "But...all those years we spent together...the dreams we shared..."
"Ah yes, the dreams," Mal said dismissively. "I have always been the skilled one when it comes to dreaming, Cobb. You were just my puppet, my plaything."
Cobb felt a surge of anger rise within him. How could she belittle everything they had shared? Everything he had worked for? "You're lying," he spat.
Mal laughed, a high-pitched sound that sent shivers down Cobb's spine. "Oh sweetie, do you really think you could have come up with all those elaborate dreamscapes on your own? That you could have manipulated me into doing your bidding?"
Cobb's mind raced as he tried to process what Mal was saying. It made sense in a twisted sort of way - he had always felt like he was playing catch-up with her when it came to dreaming and extraction. But to think that she had been manipulating him all along...
"Why?" Cobb asked, his voice filled with desperation.
Mal shrugged nonchalantly. "It amused me, I suppose. Playing with your fragile little mind." She took a step closer to him, her eyes narrowing. "But now it's time for you to pay the price, darling. You can join me in this twisted dreamscape forever."
Cobb felt a surge of panic rise within him. He had to find a way out of this, a way to break free from Mal's control. But how?
Just then, the door to the room swung open, and Robert Fischer stepped inside. "What the hell is going on here?" he demanded.
Cobb turned to face Fischer, his mind racing. He needed help, and it looked like Fischer was his only hope.
"Robert," Cobb said urgently, "you have to listen to me. None of this is real. We're trapped in a dream within a dream."
Fischer looked at Cobb with a mixture of confusion and disbelief. "You're...you're telling me that none of this is real? That I'm still dreaming?"
Cobb nodded frantically. "Yes, and we need to find a way out before Mal traps us here forever."
Fischer's eyes widened as he took in the gravity of the situation. "Okay," he said resolutely, "what do we need to do?"
Cobb felt a surge of relief wash over him - he finally had someone on his side. "We need to find the source of the dream," he explained quickly. "There has to be something or someone that Mal is using to keep us here."
Fischer nodded, his expression determined. "Let's get started then."
As Cobb and Fischer began searching the room for any clues that could lead them to the source of the dream, Mal watched them with amusement.
"You can try all you want, boys," she said with a smirk, "but you'll never escape my grasp."
But Cobb was no longer listening - he was focused on one thing and one thing only: finding a way out.
