The white mist that crept from the ground was a familiar sight. It had been there before, on a highway in the rain, and once in a castle. I reached out as it fell from the air and felt the coolness of it on my skin. It was just like before, when I had first become what I am now.
I looked down at my hands, my arms. My hands were still human, no claws or scales, but they were coated with something else. The same glistening white that covered the rest of me. My arms were a crisscross of scars and cuts, many of them still fresh, some old and pale with age. I knew what they meant; that I had lived through whatever wounds they bore witness to.
My legs were suddenly heavy, my feet planted on top of something hard that pushed against my soles. It was cold and wet, a stone floor perhaps? I couldn't tell yet, but it was familiar all the same. There was a sound above me from somewhere in the mist - voices; harsh whispers that cut through the silence like a knife through butter. They called out to me in a language unknown to me; guttural words that might have been English for all I knew.
I heard another voice call out to someone else; a woman by her tone, deep and rich with an accent that sounded vaguely French or Italian. A third voice responded quickly and calmly - female as well but without any of the harshness from before. Then another voice spoke up in French or Italian again, though this time there was no anger behind it. It sounded like she was explaining something to someone else; giving directions perhaps? She mentioned something about 'the boy' and made some kind of gesture with her hand towards me.
"Bien?" She asked in soothing tones, "Mon cherie?"
A fourth voice responded this time in accented English that sounded vaguely Germanic as well as French. "He is here." He answered calmly while also explaining something to someone else in Germanic-French terms I couldn't hope to understand.
The woman remained silent for a moment then asked softly: "Is he ready?" Her voice almost pleading now as if she didn't really want to know the answer but had to ask nonetheless.
"Yes," The man replied evenly," He is ready." He paused for a moment then continued: "Very much so." His voice sounded different somehow; more excited than calm now like he couldn't wait for whatever was happening either even if he didn't seem particularly surprised by it either way - it was almost like he'd seen it all before or something: The world ending, people dying left and right...it really shouldn't surprise him anymore if that's the case."And besides," He rolled his eyes slightly," You did your part too."
The woman sighed deeply then said simply: "The ritual worked then? We can finally move on?" Her voice cracked slightly at the last word as if she didn't quite believe what she was saying even though it seemed clear she did indeed believe it very much so given how close she sounded to tears now...or maybe she already was crying? Either way I could sense the genuine emotion behind her words so clearly now that I could almost taste it myself...and suddenly things started to make sense: The white mist surrounding me now, who these three people apparently were and why they seemed so frantic about who knows what...what does any of this have to do with me? Who am I exactly? What happened here? Where am I? Why are there four people here instead of three right now? And why am I dressed all in white like some sort of angelic being showing up out of nowhere? None of these questions made sense at first, but after staring at each one in turn long enough they started making a lot more sense than they ever should have given how nonsensical they all seemed at first glance...but at least some of them started making sense anyway because their answers were easy enough to figure out given what little information I had gathered so far: They wanted to get rid of me somehow; throw me away somewhere where no one would be able to see me or find me...like maybe into some pit or grave where no one could ever reach me again! And finally there was one last question lingering in my mind - who am I exactly? Well my name's Daniel Larsen for starters - not sure how or why I know this particularly piece of information but knowing this somehow makes all the difference between living and dying...literally because now I know exactly why these three people have brought me here - despite their best efforts otherwise!
