"Indeed, we are here," said the young girl. Her silver earrings had a slight jingle to them as she ran gracefully over the worn-out surface of the satellite.

The elderly woman following her dragged her feet, each step heavier than the last one. Nevertheless, she didn't cease her advances while her leading hand tightly grasped a support cane. This young companion that was filled with such boundless energy was truly a solace for her in these isolated years. Together, they found themselves under an enormous white rock formation, a seemingly alien structure that stood erect in the desolate plains they inhabited.

"It's right at this spot," the girl said, her voice tinged with a breathless sort of awe as she looked at their destination.

With the use of a clearing throat as punctuation, the elderly woman affirmed the girl's pronouncement. "Indeed."

"It's something to behold!" The girl spun around to face her aged mentor, luminous joy evident on her face. "You weren't telling tales!" She hesitated, turning back once more towards the towering monolith of unidentifiable white material. Caught in the harsh sunlight of the red planet, the strange object appeared to shimmer slightly. "I've never laid eyes on anything like it."

The older woman found herself nodding in response. "That you haven't." A lingering glance over their current surrounding unpacked a story laden in sorrow and struggle. They had journeyed from the dilapidated settlement where she was providing shelter and guidance to her adopted charge to this peculiar location. It wasn't overly far away from the area where, just three days prior, they had been spectators at the untimely demise of a fellow citizen whose heart had given up on him.

But being here, standing at the top of this ancient and mysterious precipice, she was overcome with an emotion alien to her since many years - hope.

"My memory seems to escape me... how did we end up here? I don't recall us ascending a hill..." The younger girl mused whilst absentmindedly looking around in an attempt to engrain every detail into her memory. Her hair, raven black in colour and cascading down her shoulders, beautifully framed an oval face that housed sparkling sapphire-like eyes. Starved and fatigue-ridden, she was supposedly sixteen years old, however, her physical appearance belied her chronological age. Despite the hardship she endured, there was an underlying essence of alluring beauty about her which was undeniably noticeable upon entering any room.

These days, encountering anyone outside the safety of underground dwellings was rare. The survival rate beyond adolescence was abysmal and those fortunate enough to defy this grim fate were left to endure the bleak reality of their existence below ground level. A lingering fear of being discovered by roaming murderers drove them underground.

All too frequently, bands of ruthless men and women armed with crude weapons and harboring flames would unravel the tranquil hills in search of innocent lives to terminate, inhabitants to loot, or people to violate, simply on basis of physical appearances, language barriers, religious beliefs or lack thereof.

And now they found themselves perched atop a panoramic view that showcased infinite plains, harboring the wreckage of what used to be a thriving civilization. However, currently, it resembled a ghost town courtesy of a severe reduction in procreation until eventually there was no one left to ensure its continuity. In such a desolate space filled with pain, suffering, and endless dying, humanity seemed on the brink of fading into oblivion. Yet, standing in such destitution, alongside her pupil and salvation was someone who embodied the ultimate act of defiance against despair.

Through years of misery and desperation, she opted for life over certain death. She extended kindness in an atmosphere devoid of reciprocation. She taught survival amidst overwhelming evidence favoring extinction. She radiated hope in an environment that crushed even the slightest optimism.

Her inner strength served as a constant reminder to those around her of the potential for goodness to flourish regardless of circumstances, overshadowing hatred, fear, and even death itself. Above all, it made a compelling case for love’s supreme ability to conquer the most malicious forms of cruelty, prompting others to make similar sacrifices in order to preserve the sanctity of life.

Consequently, everyone—be they lack understanding of why—followed her guidance. An internal instinct, perhaps? Resonating within them was an affirmation: this is the path we ought to tread; this is the quality of mutual respect and compassion we must extend to our fellow citizens."

"But, how did we arrive here?" The girl repeated, snapping back to reality from her reminiscent trance. Turning her gaze towards her revered mentor, she was confronted by an eerie solitude. She was perched alone, witness to the sight of barren plains stretching endlessly into the horizon—an epitome of a civilization that had perished due to neglect rather than war, disease, or famine

As the young girl stood there, a chill ran down her spine. The realization hit her with an unsettling force—she was alone. How had she become separated from her mentor? Panic welled up inside of her, threatening to consume her fragile sense of hope.

Frantically, she scanned the vicinity, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elderly woman's familiar form. But there was nothing. The plains stretched out before her like an empty canvas, devoid of life. It felt as if time had slowed to a crawl, the oppressive silence amplifying her fear.

She called out, her voice tentative and quivering, "Mentor? Can you hear me?" Her voice echoed through the desolation, carried away by the relentless wind. But there was no response, only the susurration of the breeze that swept across the barren landscape.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she came to terms with the reality of the situation. She was alone on this desolate satellite, with no sense of direction or purpose. The weight of solitude bore down on her, threatening to crush the fragile glimmer of hope that had brought her here in the first place.

Gathering all her resolve, the girl took a deep breath, determined to find her mentor and reunite with her. She knew that she couldn't afford to succumb to despair—not when her mentor had taught her that even in the most dire of circumstances, there was always a sliver of light that could guide her way.

With a newfound determination coursing through her veins, the girl started her descent from the towering white rock formation. Each step was deliberate, her senses heightened, as she scanned the horizon for any sign of her mentor. The wind whispered through the deserted plains, as if offering a cryptic message that only she could decipher.

Time lost all meaning as the girl ventured further into the barren landscape. But with every passing moment, the feeling of being watched intensified. It was as if unseen eyes were following her every move, their gaze penetrating her very soul. As she navigated the treacherous terrain, a sense of foreboding settled over her like a heavy shroud.

The sun had begun its descent, casting long shadows across the desolate satellite. The girl's weary legs threatened to give way, her body yearning for respite. But she couldn't stop—not now. She couldn't afford to rest until she found her mentor, until they were reunited once more.

Just as despair began to creep back into her heart, a flicker of movement caught her attention. Squinting into the distance, she saw a figure emerging from the horizon. It was her mentor, struggling through the unforgiving landscape, her face etched with exhaustion.

Relief flooded through the girl like a tidal wave, dissolving her fears and uncertainties. Without hesitation, she rushed towards her mentor, closing the distance between them with every stride. As they finally stood face to face, gasping for breath, a mixture of emotions passed between them—joy, relief, and an unspoken understanding of the trials they had endured.

The elderly woman reached out a trembling hand and gently cupped the girl's cheek. "You found me," she whispered, her voice filled with a tenderness that only a mentor could possess. "I knew you would."

Tears streamed down the girl's face as she clung onto her mentor, their embrace a testament to the unbreakable bond forged through adversity. In that moment, surrounded by the ruins of a forgotten civilization, they defied the desolation and loneliness that threatened to consume them.

Together, they would continue their journey, navigating the treacherous landscape of the satellite with renewed purpose. Their story wasn't just about survival—it was about resilience, about the unwavering belief that even in the darkest of times, the tiniest spark of hope can ignite a flame capable of illuminating the path ahead.

Hand in hand, the girl and her mentor ventured forth, their footsteps echoing through the abandoned plains. United by their shared determination, they would face whatever challenges lay ahead, secure in the knowledge that as long as they had each other, they would never truly be alone. And as they disappeared into the fading light of the day, the silent satellite bore witness to the indomitable strength of the human spirit, refusing to be extinguished even in the face of insurmountable odds.
