"Emu, Emu, where are you? I'm here to ask if you want to go to the spelling bee! I heard there's going to be one at the library today!" Lisa yelled from across the street.

"Spelling bee? At the library? That's weird!" Emu replied. She turned around from grooming her horse and looked at Lisa, who had a big smile on her face. She was always happy and cheerful. Emu, on the other hand, was more of an introvert who preferred to hang out with her horse than humans.

"Yeah! They say that whoever wins gets a free trip to Washington DC! Isn't that amazing?!" said Lisa while bouncing up and down in excitement.

"Who are they?" Emu asked.

"I don't know. The librarian just announced it," Lisa replied. It was evident that she wasn't thinking straight because she wasn't even dressed for a spelling bee. She wore a light blue skirt with white polka dots and a white blouse with blue polka dots on top of it. Her curly blonde hair was pulled back into two pigtails that reached her waist. She wore pink boots and carried a black bag in her left hand. A large red apple dangled from her right hand by its stem.

"Well, I think I'm busy today," Emu said as she continued brushing her horse's mane.

"But we haven't been anywhere together since last weekend!" Lisa protested. "Can't you take a break?"

"I guess so," said Emu hesitantly before saying goodbye to her horse and following Lisa off the farm where she lived with Clyde Farrier, the man who trained horses for money and competed at rodeos when he was younger. When they got to the city, they walked to the library together since it wasn't far away from the farm where Emu lived with her grandfather and father. They entered the building and went straight to the events room where an old man with glasses sat behind a table decorated with ribbons of different colors and patterns. He appeared very stressed out as his face was filled with frown lines and sweat dripped down his wrinkled face onto his dress shirt which had stains all over it.

"Oh my god! There are so many people here! What is this spelling bee thing? Is this like some sort of contest or something?" said Lisa as she spoke in almost one breath after another while staring wide-eyed at the crowd gathered in front of them. Everyone was wearing a ribbon on their shirts or dresses; some were even wearing glasses with ribbons tied around their arms or legs like hand bands or wristbands.

[END OF PREVIEW]

"Oh wow, I didn't expect there to be so many people here," Emu mumbled, her voice barely audible over the chatter of excitement that filled the room. She glanced over at Lisa, who seemed completely unfazed by the crowd, her eyes scanning the room in search of something.

"Do you think we'll have to do any public speaking?" Emu asked, trying to hide her rising nervousness. The idea of standing in front of all those strangers and performing was enough to make her stomach turn.

"I don't know, but I hope not," Lisa replied, her brows furrowing slightly. "But look, Emu, there's a sign-up sheet over there. We should write our names down just in case."

Emu hesitated for a moment, her fingers twitching with anxiety. But then she remembered Lisa's excitement and her pleading eyes. Taking a deep breath, she mustered up all her courage and walked over to the sign-up sheet. She picked up a pen and scrawled their names down, feeling a strange mix of apprehension and anticipation swirling inside her.

As they waited for the spelling bee to begin, Emu observed the diverse group of contestants. There were children with braces and backpacks, teenagers with trendy clothes and perfectly styled hair, and even a few adults, all wearing expressions of determination mixed with nerves. It was a motley crew, bound together by their shared desire to win a trip to Washington DC.

The old man with glasses, who had looked so overwhelmed earlier, finally stood up from his seat at the front of the room. The crowd fell silent, their eyes trained on him expectantly.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Annual Cedarville Spelling Bee!" his voice boomed, surprising Emu with its sudden authority. "My name is Mr. Harrington, and I will be your host for this evening. Please give a warm applause to our esteemed panel of judges."

The audience clapped politely as three individuals took their seats beside Mr. Harrington. There was a middle-aged woman with a stern expression, a bespectacled man who seemed lost in his own world, and a young woman who radiated confidence.

"Now, without further ado, let's get this spelling bee started!" Mr. Harrington declared with a twinkle in his eye. A hush fell over the room as he called the first contestant to the microphone.

Emu watched as each participant stepped forward, nervously tackling words that were thrown their way. Some stumbled, their faces reddening with embarrassment, while others spelled with ease, their brows furrowed in concentration.

Finally, it was Emu's turn. Her heart pounded in her chest as she walked towards the microphone, but she tried to steady herself, drawing strength from Lisa's encouraging smile. Mr. Harrington looked down at his clipboard and then up at her, his eyes filled with curiosity.

"Emu, isn't it?" he asked, and Emu nodded, her voice too shaky to form a proper response. "Very well, Emu. Your word is 'serendipity'."

Emu closed her eyes, taking a moment to gather her thoughts. The image of her beloved horse, Midnight, flashed in her mind, and suddenly, a calmness washed over her. She took a deep breath and began spelling, each letter rolling off her tongue with certainty.

"S-E-R-E-N-D-I-P-I-T-Y. Serendipity," she stated, her voice surprisingly steady.

Mr. Harrington's eyebrows shot up in surprise before a smile tugged at his lips. "Correct! Well done, Emu!"

A wave of applause erupted from the audience, and Emu found herself blushing from the sheer joy of accomplishment. She hurriedly made her way back to her seat, her face glowing with pride.

As the spelling bee continued, Emu watched with a newfound confidence. The nerves that had once knotted her stomach had been replaced by a sense of excitement and determination. She cheered for Lisa when her turn came up, and they exchanged hopeful smiles, both feeling the magic of the moment.

Hours passed, and with each correct spelling, the field of contestants narrowed. Emu and Lisa found themselves among the finalists, their hearts pounding in sync as they faced off against each other in the final round.

The tension in the room was palpable as Mr. Harrington called out the last, most challenging word yet. He leaned closer to the microphone, enunciating each letter with purpose.

"The word is 'juxtaposition'," he announced.

Emu looked at Lisa, her eyes filled with determination. This wasn't just about winning a trip anymore; it was about proving something to themselves. With a confident smile, they locked eyes, silently reassuring each other.

Together, they spelled the word flawlessly, their voices intertwining in perfect harmony. The room erupted in applause and cheers, and Mr. Harrington declared them joint winners.

Emu and Lisa's smiles were wide and bright as they held hands and took a bow, their hearts brimming with gratitude and a newfound bond. They may have come to the spelling bee as friends, but they left as champions, ready to embark on a grand adventure together—a journey that would forever change their lives.
