His hands were still shaking when he picked up the letter. It was a simple envelope, just like all the others had been. A single word written on it -

“James”

He took it from the mailbox, his breath catching in his throat as he read her name. Rachel.

It was four years now since they had last seen each other, four years since they had said goodbye at the train station in Washington DC. It was supposed to be only a short break, an overnight stay at a hotel with a view of the White House, before returning to their normal lives and everyday routine. But then the news came and everything changed. The war had begun and quickly spread across the world. China against Russia, India against Pakistan, Israel against Iran, so many countries against each other. There was nothing anyone could do to stop it. When the bombs dropped everyone knew that everything would change in ways that no one could have imagined and no one would ever want to imagine again.

Nothing about what happened during those first few weeks made any sense to him and even now he still couldn’t quite fathom what had happened or how it had happened. The United States itself hadn’t been attacked but there were thousands of people who perished in cities across Asia and Europe as missiles rained down from the sky onto densely populated areas and economic centres. The death tolls were unimaginable but even more terrifying than the number of fatalities for most was the fact that nobody knew who was responsible for this attack on humanity. All the world leaders denied any involvement but no one believed them; instead everyone pointed fingers at everyone else and started accusing each other of being behind this global catastrophe. Soon after that there was a global nuclear war between nearly every major country in the world, resulting in millions more deaths than even this initial attack had caused. Nuclear winter soon followed suit, turning summer into winter as temperatures dropped to below freezing point almost everywhere on earth and many agricultural regions became barren wastelands where nothing survived except for plants which grew unnaturally quickly without being exposed to natural light cycles or seasons anymore and creatures which adapted to these new conditions by mutating into grotesque humanoid creatures with twisted bodies and minds fuelled by fear and anger towards anything that didn't look like them or behave like them or think like them.

The world had gone mad and James hadn't wanted any part of it anymore; he wanted to go back home to Columbia and find Rachel and try to survive together through whatever may come their way until they could return to normal life once again someday but she had insisted on staying in DC until she finished her internship at one of the local hospitals. She said she couldn't leave while everybody around her was suffering because she had never been able to stand by while people needed help; she always felt too guilty if she turned away from someone who needed her help or advice or treatment or anything really so he went back home alone, promising himself that he would return as soon as possible but then it all got so much worse...

A month after the initial attack Washington DC was hit with a nuclear bomb of its own, killing half a million people instantly in an instant flash of fire that scorched everything in its path for miles around until nothing remained except for blackened earth covered with melted glass and ashes raining down from above... He thought about going back there to search for her but something inside him told him not to go there ever again; instead he started searching for her all over the country but everywhere seemed just as bad or even worse than Washington itself so eventually he gave up hope of finding her alive anywhere else outside Columbia so they could be together once again... He didn’t know where she was now or whether she was still alive but somehow he felt sure that if she wasn’t dead yet then perhaps somewhere deep inside herself she still held on to some semblance of hope that they would meet again one day... Maybe even today? That's why he opened his front door before dawn this morning - because sometimes letters carried by birds arrived with good news rather than bad! Letters sent by people who wanted nothing more than to share their joy with someone else; letters sent by those simply looking for a connection with another human being after having been separated from their loved ones for far too long! Rachel's letters were always like that - full of joy and hope despite all odds! He himself still wrote letters - lots of them - hoping that maybe just maybe somebody might write back! But so far nobody ever did...

He walked out onto his porch overlooking his garden with its overgrown grass and dying flowers, his eyes tearing up almost immediately because he knew what awaited him when he walked down these stairs: An empty post box which contained nothing but an envelope marked “James”. Why did she keep writing letters if none of them ever arrived? He couldn't figure out why until suddenly it hit him: Perhaps hers weren't the only letters which never arrived either? Could it be possible that somewhere out there somebody was also writing letters addressed “Rachel”? Could it be possible that someone somewhere kept sending letters marked “James” without receiving anything back? How crazy did that sound? But then again... How crazy is life nowadays anyway? If two people can get separated from each other forever simply because they chose different directions when leaving a train station four years ago how crazy is it then when they both keep sending letters which never arrive anywhere? Does this mean they're somehow connected even though they're worlds apart? Does this mean they're destined to meet again one day despite not having seen each other for far too long? Does this mean they're meant to be together after all no matter what obstacles life throws at them? It sounds crazy! But it feels right! So very right indeed!
