I can't believe we're having this conversation again, Mike."

Mike sighed. "Look, I'm just saying that I need some space. We've been together for a long time and I think it's healthy to have some time apart."

"Time apart?" Emily's voice was incredulous. "We live together, Mike. How much more space do you need?"

"It's not about physical space," he replied. "It's about emotional space. I just feel like we're suffocating each other, you know? We need to take a step back and figure out what we really want."

Emily crossed her arms over her chest, anger flashing in her eyes. "So you're saying you want to break up?"

"No! That's not what I'm saying at all." Mike ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "I love you, Em. I really do. But maybe we rushed into things too quickly. Maybe we need to slow down and make sure this is what we both want."

Tears welled up in Emily's eyes as she looked at him. "You don't know if this is what you want? After everything we've been through?"

Mike reached out to touch her arm but she pulled away from him.

"I just need some time to think," he said softly.

"Well, take as much time as you need," she replied icily.

They stood there in silence for a moment before Mike spoke again.

"Is there someone else?" he asked quietly.

Emily's head snapped up at the question and she glared at him.

"How could you even ask me that?" she demanded.

"I don't know," he admitted. "I guess I'm just trying to understand why you're being so distant lately."

"I'm not being distant," she snapped. "I've just been busy with work, that's all."

"Yeah, work," Mike muttered under his breath. "Is that why you've been getting home so late every night?"

Emily's eyes narrowed at the accusation. "I told you, I've been working late."

"Okay, I believe you," he said quickly. "I'm sorry for accusing you. It's just... I don't know what to think anymore."

Emily sighed and her anger seemed to deflate a little.

"I love you, Mike," she said softly. "And I want this to work. But we can't do that if we're constantly questioning each other and not being honest about how we feel."

Mike nodded in agreement.

"You're right," he said. "We need to have an open and honest conversation about our relationship and where we see it going."

Emily smiled at him and reached out to take his hand.

"I'm glad we're on the same page," she said.

Mike squeezed her hand and smiled back at her.

"Yeah, me too." He paused for a moment before continuing. "So, how about we go out for dinner tonight? Just the two of us. We can talk about everything then."

Emily nodded in agreement.

"That sounds like a good idea," she replied. "I'd like that."

They shared a smile before Mike leaned in to kiss Emily gently on the lips.

"Me too," he whispered against her mouth.

As they pulled away from each other, Emily's phone rang from somewhere in the apartment.

"Saved by the bell," Mike joked as Emily went to answer it.

He watched as she spoke briefly on the phone before hanging up with a frown on her face.

"Who was that?" he asked curiously.

"It was my boss," she replied with a sigh. "There's been an emergency at work and they need me to come in right away."

Mike's face fell at the news but he tried not to let his disappointment show.

"Oh, okay," he said. "I guess we'll have to reschedule our dinner then."

Emily nodded and walked over to him, placing a hand on his arm.

"I'm really sorry, Mike," she said sincerely. "But I promise we'll talk as soon as I get home, okay?"

Mike smiled at her and nodded in agreement.

"Okay," he said. "I'll be here when you get back."

Emily leaned in to give him a quick kiss before grabbing her bag and heading out the door.

"See you later," she called over her shoulder as she left.

Mike stood there for a moment, a smile on his face, before he remembered something.

"Oh, crap!" he exclaimed, running over to the counter where his phone was charging.

He picked it up and quickly dialed a number before putting it to his ear.

"Hey, Mom," he said when she answered. "Are you still coming over for dinner tonight? Because if you are, I need your help with something..."
