Cryptid Pursuit
·
Published 3/12/2023Three adventurous men possessing vastly different skillsets - Wu's FBI agent savvy, John's military acumen, and Grey Wolf's police training - race against time to uncover the truth behind legendary cryptids in the US, only to realize they face danger closer than they could have ever imagined.
"We need a name for our team." Wu said.
"Yeah, yeah. We've already been over this. It should be something that captures the essence of our mission." John said as he picked at his teeth with his pinky finger and then sucked on it.
"I'm thinking something like... The Four Horsemen." Grey Wolf said. "But we have to have a better name than *that*."
"Well, I don't know man. It's actually kind of perfect." John said as he yawned, stretched, and scratched his back. He was clearly still annoyed by the fact that they'd been up all night dealing with yet another cryptid sighting in the area. "The Four Horsemen are four mythological creatures that each represent death in some way or another. They're based around the Christian apocalypse just like most other myths from around the world. I think it's genius."
"Except not genius enough to convince me to be one of them." Wu said as he leaned back in his chair and stared out the window at the dawning light of day. "I'm not a horseman and I'm not even sure if I want to be in charge of anything other than my own life at this point."
"You can't just put yourself down like that man!" John said as he turned towards Wu and slapped him on the arm playfully. "You've been doing great work here! You've got experience as a detective in a major city police department and you were also a member of an elite military special forces unit! Who else do we know who could say they *did* those things?"
Wu considered this for a moment while absently rubbing his arm where John had hit him. While John's words did make sense, there was more to it than that. Only a few years before, Wu would never have considered working anywhere other than in law enforcement but now? Now he was just trying to survive long enough to get through the day without killing himself or anyone else for that matter.
"Pshh fine whatever." Wu finally relented before turning towards Grey Wolf who seemed content to watch them argue from afar without offering any input himself. "So what about you? What's your opinion?"
"I dunno man. I mean I'm all for whatever gets us paid so whatever you two are arguing about is fine by me." Grey Wolf shrugged as he took another bite of his breakfast burrito and then crumpled up the paper wrapper and tossed it behind him into a nearby trash can.
Wu stood up abruptly and began pacing across the room in front of their desks while shooting anxious glances at both John and Grey Wolf as they watched him with confused looks on their faces. For a moment, Wu felt like he might be going crazy but then he realized what was happening: He'd remembered something important that needed to be done immediately and by God he wasn't going to wait another second to do it!
"Fuck you guys, I'm going home!" Wu shouted before gathering up his stuff and storming out of the office slamming the door shut behind him hard enough to rattle all of their windows.
