Published 12/1/2023Jake leaned back in his chair, a smug smile playing on his lips. "Well, boys," he said, "it looks like I'm the big winner tonight."
The other three men around the table groaned and muttered under their breaths. Jake had been on a winning streak all night, and it seemed like there was no end in sight. He'd taken everyone's money and then some.
"I don't know how you do it," said Tom, shaking his head. "Every time we play cards, you come out on top."
"It's all about strategy," Jake replied, still grinning. "You've gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em."
"Or maybe you're just lucky," muttered Bill.
Jake's grin faded slightly. "It's not luck," he said. "I've got skill."
"Yeah, yeah," said Frank, rolling his eyes. "We've heard it all before."
The men began to gather up their cards and count their losses. Jake watched them with a satisfied expression.
"Just admit it," he said. "I'm the best card player in town."
"Maybe so," Tom conceded. "But that doesn't mean we have to like it."
As the men got ready to leave, there was a knock at the door.
"Now who could that be?" wondered Frank.
Jake got up from the table and went to answer the door. When he saw who was standing on the other side, his heart sank.
"Evening, boys," said Sheriff Thompson with a grin.
"What can we do for you, Sheriff?" asked Tom nervously.
"I heard there was some gambling going on here tonight," said Thompson.
"Oh, no!" exclaimed Bill.
"That's against the law!" cried Frank.
"I'm afraid they're right," said Thompson with a nod.
"But we were just having a friendly game of cards!" protested Jake.
"Is that so?" said Thompson, raising an eyebrow. "Well, then I'm sure you won't mind if I take a look at your winnings."
Jake's heart pounded in his chest as he led the sheriff into the room. The other men watched anxiously as Thompson counted the money on the table.
"Well, well," said Thompson with a smirk. "Looks like you had quite a lucky night, Jake."
"I told you I was good," Jake replied weakly.
"Too bad gambling's illegal in this town," said Thompson.
"What are you gonna do, Sheriff?" asked Tom nervously.
"Well, normally I'd have to arrest you all and confiscate the money," said Thompson. "But since it's such a nice night out, I think we can come to some kind of arrangement."
"Really?" said Frank hopefully.
"Yes," said Thompson. "I'll let you boys off with a warning this time. But if I catch you gambling again, there will be consequences."
The men let out sighs of relief.
"Thank you, Sheriff," said Bill gratefully.
"Yeah, thanks," echoed Tom and Frank.
"Don't mention it," said Thompson with a wave of his hand. "Just remember what I said."
As the sheriff left, the men turned to Jake with grateful expressions on their faces.
"We owe you one," said Tom.
"Yeah," agreed Bill. "Thanks for taking one for the team."
"No problem," said Jake with a shrug. "It was worth it to see the look on your faces when I won all your money."
The other men groaned and rolled their eyes.
