My first night in Mexico, I headed to the town square after hearing the street vendors were selling tacos. I wasn't sure how good they would be. In my country, no one really makes them the way they should be made, but these people seemed to know what they were doing.

I tried a few different places until I found one that was pretty good. They had a lot of varieties and their tortillas were light and thin and not too oily. So I ordered as many as I could eat so that I could take some home for my friends and family back home.

"You have plenty of time." The woman who owned the place told me with a smile after she saw my pile of tacos. "There's no rush."

She was right, it was getting late in the evening by then, so I took my time eating my tacos while enjoying the live music that was playing on a stage at one end of the plaza. It was a beautiful night, one of those nights where you just want to sit on a bench and enjoy life without feeling rushed or having to be anywhere else.

I had just finished eating when I felt something strange happen inside my body. It wasn't painful, but it was definitely noticeable. I pressed my hand against my stomach, which is where I felt it most strongly. But it didn't really feel like gas being released from within. It felt more like air being sucked into the lining of my stomach cavity through some kind of filter valve in my stomach lining. My gut started gurgling like crazy for several minutes, making me feel nauseous and lightheaded. At first, it didn't even occur to me that this might be related to the meal I'd just eaten. All sorts of things can cause indigestion or nausea if you've just eaten something you're not used to eating, so I tried not to think about it too much and just focus on enjoying myself for the rest of the night.

The next morning however, after waking up with a sore belly and feeling more exhausted than usual, I decided maybe it would be best if I stuck to food from home while I was here in Mexico. That taco dinner went straight into the trash bin once I got back to my hotel room; thankfully there wasn't much left over after all that walked home with me last night!

When I woke up that morning though, still feeling tired even after sleeping ten hours straight last night, there was a smell in my room that made me think twice about throwing out those tacos: a foul stench that permeated every corner of my room and caused me to gag because it was so overpowering!

I couldn't believe it! What had happened?! When did this smell start? Was this related at all to those tacos?

I quickly opened all the windows in my hotel room, desperately hoping to let in some fresh air and rid myself of the putrid stench that assaulted my senses. The rancid odor lingered, clinging to the walls and furniture, as if it had seeped into every crevice. It was then that I realized the smell was coming from me.

Panicked, I rushed to the bathroom and stared at myself in the mirror, seeking any visible signs of what was happening. My reflection stared back at me, pale and bewildered, as if mirroring the fear that crept into my heart. My mind raced, trying to make sense of the situation. How could a simple meal of tacos cause such a repulsive stench to emanate from me?

I splashed cold water on my face, attempting to calm myself down. The water did little to ease my growing anxiety, and as I gazed at the mirror once more, I noticed an eerie glint in my eyes. They were no longer the vibrant blue they had always been but had transformed into a sickly, dull gray. It was as if a part of me had been robbed in the night, leaving only remnants of my former self.

As the day progressed, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was terribly wrong. The locals I encountered seemed to avoid me, their gazes filled with apprehension and unease. It was as if they could sense the foulness that clung to me, even if they couldn't see or smell it. Their reluctance to interact with me only heightened my sense of isolation and confusion.

I decided to confide in the hotel manager, a kind-hearted middle-aged woman named Rosa who had welcomed me with warm hospitality. As I entered the lobby, her eyes widened and darted away, unable to meet my gaze. The air grew heavy with unspoken words as I approached her, my voice barely a whisper as I spoke of the strange events that had unfolded since my encounter with the tacos.

Rosa listened intently, her expression a mix of concern and fear. After a moment of silence, her voice quivered as she spoke, "I have heard of such things before. Legends and old stories whisper of a cursed taco stand that only appears to those who are outsiders, seeking a taste of our cuisine." She paused, her eyes filled with sympathy. "Once you partake in those tacos, it is said that a curse envelops you, transforming your very being into an abomination until you either leave our land or find a way to break the curse."

My heart sank as her words washed over me. A curse? It seemed so far-fetched, yet the evidence spoke for itself. I had become a walking source of repulse, a living testament to this curse. Determination welled up within me, refusing to accept this as my permanent state. I begged Rosa to help me, to guide me to someone who could offer a solution.

Her eyes softened with compassion. "There is a wise woman, Esperanza, who lives on the outskirts of town. She is known for her knowledge of ancient remedies and curses. She may hold the key to breaking this curse."

With newfound hope, I thanked Rosa and set off to find Esperanza, my every step weighted with the grotesque stench that served as a constant reminder of my curse. As I ventured deeper into the outskirts of the town, the familiarity of civilization dissipated, giving way to a dense forest, its looming shadows clinging to my troubled soul.

The path grew treacherous, with thorny vines and gnarled roots threatening to trip me at every turn. With each painful step, I wondered if the curse had infected the very ground beneath me, ensuring that my journey would not be an easy one. And so, I pressed on, determination fueling my resolve. I needed answers, and I was willing to face whatever challenges awaited me in my quest for redemption.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the thicket cleared, revealing a humble cottage nestled at the heart of the forest. The air held a mysterious tranquility as I cautiously approached, the door creaking open as if welcoming a weary traveler in need.

Eager anticipation flooded my senses as I entered the cottage, only to be met by the wise, weathered face of Esperanza. She studied me, her eyes glimmering with ancient wisdom. "I have been expecting you," she whispered. "You seek answers, do you not? A way to break free from the curse that binds you?"

Tears welled up in my eyes as relief washed over me. Esperanza knew, she understood the agony I had endured. "Please," I pleaded, my voice wavering. "Help me. Show me how to be free from this curse."

A knowing smile graced Esperanza's face as she gestured for me to sit. "Child, the curse that has plagued you is no ordinary curse. It is a curse born from the depths of betrayal and lost love. The pain you carry within you has manifested itself, reshaping your very existence."

My heart skipped a beat at her words. Betrayal and lost love? Memories I had long buried surged forward, twisting my emotions into a lamentation of broken bonds. How could the curse be tied to my past? And more importantly, could I ever find solace and liberation from it?

Esperanza reached out, her hands gentle and comforting. "Fear not, for redemption lies within your grasp," she murmured. "But first, you must confront the darkness that binds you. Only then can you unravel the curse and restore balance to your soul."

Her words resonated deep within me, stirring a flicker of courage within my heart. I knew the path would be arduous, fraught with the haunting echoes of my past, but I was prepared to face my inner demons. With Esperanza as my guide, I embarked on a journey of introspection and self-discovery, determined to break free from the curse’s suffocating grasp and reclaim my true self, no matter the cost.
