Future Self

The city was a labyrinth of neon and shadows, its streets slick with rain. Dr. Hawthorne stood on the rooftop, watching the hero below as he fought against the criminal element that plagued their shared world.
Dr. Hawthorne had once been this hero, but time had a way of changing people. The hero's optimism and idealism had faded over the years, replaced by cynicism and bitterness. He had become jaded, disillusioned with the world he had sworn to protect.
But Dr. Hawthorne knew that there was still hope for his younger self. A chance to change his destiny and prevent the catastrophe that awaited them both in the future.
He activated the time-travel device on his wrist, stepping into a swirling vortex that transported him back in time.
When he emerged, he found himself in an alleyway near where the hero was engaged in battle with a group of criminals.
"Need some help?" Dr. Hawthorne asked, joining in the fight without waiting for an answer.
The hero looked at him warily as they fought side by side.
"I know you," he said. "You're Dr. Hawthorne."
"In the flesh," Dr. Hawthorne replied, delivering a powerful punch to one of their assailants.
"But you're...you're supposed to be dead," the hero said, confusion evident in his voice.
Dr. Hawthorne shrugged off the comment, not wanting to reveal too much too soon.
"Time travel has its perks," he said cryptically.
They finished off the last of their attackers and stood panting for breath, eyeing each other warily.
"Why are you here?" the hero asked finally.
"To save us both," Dr. Hawthorne replied simply.
He explained about their shared future and what awaited them if they continued down their current paths. The destruction and despair that would consume them both if they didn't make some drastic changes.
The hero listened in silence, his expression unreadable.
"I don't believe you," he said finally. "You could be lying, manipulating me for your own gain."
Dr. Hawthorne sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
"I knew you would react this way," he said. "But I'm telling the truth. I've seen what happens if we don't change our course."
The hero's brow furrowed in thought as he considered Dr. Hawthorne's words.
"Even if I do believe you," he said slowly, "how can I trust that your plan is any better than mine? How can I trust myself?"
Dr. Hawthorne smiled sadly, understanding the hero's predicament all too well.
"You'll have to decide for yourself," he said. "But remember this: we're not so different, you and I. We both want what's best for this city, even if our methods are different."
The hero nodded slowly, still unsure but willing to consider Dr. Hawthorne's words.
"Alright," he said finally. "I'll give you a chance to prove yourself."
Dr. Hawthorne smiled, grateful for the opportunity.
"Thank you," he said sincerely.
And together, they set off into the night, determined to find a way to save themselves and their city from the darkness that threatened to consume them all.
