I was sitting in a grass hut, awaiting the arrival of my guide. He had been with me since I started this expedition, but until now, we hadn't really talked. Truth be told, I didn't really know what to talk about with the guy. His name was Lucas, and he was Brazilian, so that made him perfect for my purposes.

He walked into the hut with a look of confusion on his face. "What's wrong?" I asked him nervously.

"Nothing," he said quickly. "I'm just surprised you're actually waiting here instead of exploring." He grinned as he sat down in the opposite chair, kicking his legs back onto the table in front of us. "Things went well last night?"

"Of course," I said, rolling my eyes at him. "How could it not? We were in a five star hotel room!"

"Yeah," he said, looking off into the distance thoughtfully for a moment before turning back to me. "And how many stars did you give your trip so far?" He leaned forward with a grin as he asked me the question, obviously looking forward to a good laugh at my expense. But instead of laughing along with him, I just sighed heavily and put my head in my hands. Maybe he didn't understand how much this meant to me; maybe he was too young to remember what it felt like to have dreams that seemed too big for you. Maybe I shouldn't expect him to understand any of this; I don't think anyone else could possibly understand what I was feeling right now either.

It began eight years ago when I was still in high school - always an A student and never one to cause trouble in class, except when Dr. Larkin walked by my desk and gave me a look like he knew something nobody else did. It wasn't until college that things got weird: before every major test or paper due date, Dr. Larkin would show up out of nowhere and tell me exactly what I needed to do to get straight A's on everything I wrote that semester - even if those assignments weren't even handed out yet! At first I thought it was just coincidence; after all, everyone knows there are certain people who are luckier than others - but after two semesters of perfect grades thanks to some strange man shadowing my every move, I knew there was more to it than that. And then one day, when we were walking from class back to my dormitory building together, Dr. Larkin stopped in his tracks and turned back towards me as though he had made a decision: "You need to lose the glasses," he mumbled almost under his breath; "you look ridiculous." And then without another word, he continued walking ahead of me without giving me time to respond before disappearing through the doors leading outside into the parking lot.

That night as I lay in bed staring at my reflection through the vanity mirror propped up against my wall near the ceiling above my desk I realized that not only had he been right about what kind of glasses suited me best (the ones currently resting on top of my head), but also that whatever force it was guiding his actions must have been able to see past everything - even something as simple as my ability to see clearly! As I stared at myself transfixed by thoughts of what this revelation could mean for both Dr. Larkin and myself, suddenly an idea struck me: surely if this force could see past everything else so easily - and if it could manipulate events around me - then surely it would be able to help me find answers as well! So as soon as morning rolled around the next day and classes were over for the week (and Dr. Larkin had disappeared again) I set out for the nearest public library and spent all afternoon researching everything on ancient civilizations and lost tribes hidden deep within the rainforests across Brazil - including those on the very outskirts of where Lucas had grown up! When Friday rolled around again however (and Dr. Larkin had returned) there was no time left for research; instead we went out together that night while wearing matching tuxedos (collected from our closets of course) and danced until sunrise at a trendy new club downtown that neither of us had ever heard of before deciding we should check out together earlier in the day!
