Lorn's Perilous Destiny

The vastness of space was a little disconcerting. When I took my first flight into it, I found the emptiness unsettling. For a while, I even thought that something was wrong with me—that I had lost my mind in some way. I couldn’t remember what it felt like to have another body pressed against mine and yet there I was, so far from any star or planet that all I could see was the darkness of space, with only the occasional speck of light for company.

That, and the ship. It wasn’t much to look at. It was roughly triangular and white, with a single black stripe going down its length, barely visible against the infinite black void around it. The ship was shaped like a spearhead; if you tried to imagine a spear that had been thrown out of orbit so far that it was no longer spinning but was instead flying without rotation, you would get something akin to my ship.

I had been traveling through space for two months now, and each day seemed like an eternity. You could call me Lorn the Lonely, or perhaps Lorn the Lonely Superhero, but never Lorn the Happy Traveler. My excellent flying skills made it so I never got tired or bored on my journeys through space, but they did nothing to take away the crushing sense of loneliness that weighed upon me as I contemplated how many light years were between myself and home.

Being half-human and half-alien didn't help either; I didn't have a home to go back to anymore. I'd left behind everything when I'd left Earth behind in order to fight Agamemnon's forces on their own turf. But still...I'd rather be fighting than sitting out here in space all alone in this empty expanse with only my thoughts for company—thoughts which seemed to turn darker and more desperate with each passing day as I found myself wondering whether humans and aliens could ever find peace between them now that war had been declared between us by that madman Agamemnon.

That thought brought me back to reality right quick; a wave of relief washed over me as my eyes fell upon something floating in space nearby. It was another ship...and it looked like it might be moving nearby! Maybe they could give me some solace while we rode through this seemingly endless night together? Yes...that sounded wonderful...just what I needed to lift my spirits!

"Hello!" I shouted over towards the other ship's direction as I flew closer towards them, doing my best not to sound too eager but also not to sound too indifferent because who wants to talk to an indifferent person? "Do you mind if we talk for a bit?"

There was no response at first, but then someone's voice came back through our relay devices: "Who are you?"

"My name is Lorn! Who are you?" After they replied just as politely—saying their names were Rax and Galen—we kept chatting back and forth until we met up face-to-face outside our ships' airlocks. They were humanoid in shape but had purple skin whereas mine was greenish blue; they also had no hair but their noses were kind of flat (which I found interesting). These two were quite different from me in appearance but they also shared one thing with me: as soon as we saw each other, we instantly knew that we liked each other! When Galen squeezed Rax's hand gently before reaching out his hand towards me—his smile somehow already making me feel warm inside—we all smiled at one another like we were old friends reuniting after being apart for far too long!
