Fibonacci's Fated Challenge
·
Published 3/27/2023With his aptitude for mathematics and enigmatic narrative abilities, brilliant investigator Fibo takes on the challenge of solving an unlikely crime in a faraway galaxy, braving bittersweet emotions, unexpected motives, and unknown secrets to bring justice, hope and peace to the people of this distant world.
"A perfect case," Fibo thought, as he looked at the crime scene.
"The Fibonacci sequence is all around us. In nature, in art, and especially in crime. The Golden Ratio is everywhere as well." Fibo noted that the pattern of the blood stains was a fractal of Phi.
"The first murder of its kind in this species' history. First contact with such a primitive race, and they commit their first crime, and here I am investigating it. I can't let the Intergalactic Council down now, can I?" Fibo then removed a small device from his pocket and slid it over the bloody hand print on the wall. It clicked as it took a DNA sample, and displayed the result on its screen. Fibo sighed, "I expected something like this..."
He then walked to one of the two bodies lying on the floor. He pressed his fingers against what would have been the victim's neck for most races, but for these creatures it was where their fleshy part began to turn into their exoskeleton. He felt no pulse or heartbeat from either body. He glanced at their faces; they were identical except for their size difference. They both had light brown skin and golden eyes with slit pupils like those of cats'. Their mouths were also different: One had large fangs protruding from its upper jaw, while the other had none at all. There were two sets of clawed hands and feet, but only one pair of wings on each back. Fibo inspected their remains further: Two pairs of arms with three clawed fingers on each hand; four eyes; six legs... So much symmetry!
"The perfect crime indeed..."
Fibo closed his eyes to think more clearly about how this could have happened. Suddenly one of his eyes opened wide in surprise, "The sequence! The sequence!" he shouted as if he had just discovered something new about gravity or time travel... "My dear Mersennio! What an obvious mistake!" He quickly made up a plan to solve this strange murder case before going home for dinner (he was still curious about what Mersennio would make for dinner).
He would need to send out a message to someone who could help him make sense of this crime scene better. He didn't want anyone else to see what he saw though, so he decided to send out the video recordings straight to his friend through a secure connection. He then went out of his ship towards where he would meet with this intelligent being - an ice planet inhabited by an animal life form that seemed to live under constant hypothermia - which he called "Nerdy", as they both shared similar qualities (the big glasses and enthusiasm for knowledge). His meeting with Nerdy was set up months ago by himself during a research trip nearby; he chose Nerdy because Nerdy too has always wanted answers but knows when not to push forward too much into unknown territory... Like him ... He knew that once he explained everything about this case to Nerdy later in the day (after checking with Intergalactic Council's approval), Nerdy would be able to help him unravel everything over dinner tonight after work...
As Fibo arrived on the surface of the planet's ice-covered moon, he heard a loud noise behind him: A high-pitched whistling sound that gradually grew louder until it became an unbearable shrieking noise so loud it left him deaf temporarily... When it finally stopped some seconds later, Fibo cautiously turned around and saw Nerdy standing right behind him with a big smile on his face: "You're late", said Nerdy excitedly in between gasps for air. Fibo felt a bit annoyed by Nerdy's sudden appearance so close behind him but decided not to show it again after remembering how nervous Nerdy gets when angry...
Once inside Fibo's spaceship and seated comfortably in front of Fibo's desk in silence waiting for Fibo's explanation about the crime scene outside (while eating some dried squid snacks), Nerdy asked impatiently: "So? What happened? You're always so secretive when you're investigating cases and then you never tell me anything!" While looking at him with disgust over his meal, Nerdy continued: "Why are you always so mean? You should treat your best friend better than that!"
Fibo put down his pen on his investigation report and looked at Nerdy deeply in the eyes: "Do you remember our first conversation?" Asked Fibo calmly while leaning back in his chair slowly without taking his eyes off of Nerdy...
"Our first conversation?" asked Nerdy confused by what Fibo had just said (Nerdy never remembered any conversations they ever had clearly - except when they talked about math!). Seeing that look in Nerdy's eyes made Fibo want to scream out loud! After all these years together! And yet... he remained calm instead...
"Yes! Our first conversation!" Said Fibo calmly while looking deep into those big round glasses sitting on top of those goofy ears...
"Well.. umm.. No.. I don't remember," replied Nerdy hesitantly after thinking deeply about their past together for some time now... "What does that have to do with today's investigation anyway?" added Nerdy looking nervous...
"Nothing..." replied Fibo calmly while still staring deep into those big round glasses sitting on top of those goofy ears...
