I knew I was in trouble when the ship went down. Of course no one else could see it. They were too busy screaming and panicking that their lives were about to end, that they would never make it back home again to their mothers and wives. I was the only one who turned around and saw her standing on the shore of the island, staring out at us with hungry eyes.
I begged the oarsmen to row faster, but they wouldn't listen. They didn't want to go anywhere near that black figure on the beach, and I couldn't blame them. Myself? Well, I've always been a bit of a dreamer, a romantic if you will. The mere thought of a woman standing there alone on an empty beach stirred something deep within me... Something that made me want to go meet her, no matter what happened next. It wasn't until later that I realized how foolish that notion was.
The ship went down just as we reached land. I watched as our captain steered us into shore too close to that dark figure, and it all happened so fast. In an instant she had the ship by its keel in her hands and was dragging it up onto the beach like it was nothing more than driftwood. We had barely enough time to scramble out of the water before she set the ship down right on top of her strange little hut; crushing it under its weight like a child's toy boat. As she did so, I noticed several things:
1) She had snakes for hair
2) Her body stretched from one side of the horizon to the other
3) She was easily bigger than any human should ever be allowed to be
4) She was still staring straight at me with those hungry eyes.

As soon as my feet hit land, I knew I should have listened to my instincts and kept my mouth shut about this mystery woman who stood on the beach waiting for me. But nooo... Not me! Oh well... At least she didn't try eating me or anything like that! That's all that really mattered at this point anyway... Right? Right! So long as she didn't eat me then everything would be ok, right? Right! Sure thing! Just keep telling yourself that John... Just keep telling yourself that!
