I'm flying! Honestly, I've never felt this way before. I'm not sure whether to classify it as flying or falling. Maybe both? The stars... the sky is so beautiful. Never have I seen this many stars in my life. And the planets... so many of them! A few days ago, we took a small ship out to explore the solar system and I couldn't help but stare at all the stars as we flew past them. It was so magical. Flying in space is an experience worth having in your lifetime, but in this moment I feel like it's just been robbed from me.
The small ship that took me and my crew out here has been destroyed. All of us are dead. We were never supposed to be here in the first place. We were supposed to stay on Earth and leave everything in space alone. If only we had followed protocol... maybe then I would still be back home with my family right now. Maybe then I could see my mother again one last time before she passed away.
Instead, here I am floating through space, completely lost, hoping that someone will find me soon before my oxygen runs out or some other unfortunate thing happens to me throughout the journey back home.
As I float through space, I turn on my communication device and send a distress signal out into space hoping that someone will hear me and come for help. I wait for about twenty minutes before seeing a bright light approaching me from what seems like everywhere in the sky at once. A large spaceship appears out of thin air causing me to gasp in shock as its engines turn off allowing it to drift over next to me where I am floating helplessly through space with no gravity to hold me down or keep me steady.
I watch as its hatch opens and three people exit from inside looking around at their surroundings with confusion written across their faces. They look down at me once they finally notice my presence and their eyes widen with surprise when they realize who they have found. I smile weakly back up at them, trying to assure them that everything is fine even though my spaceship was destroyed in an asteroid field while exploring outside our solar system. I remind myself that discussing the dangerous aspect of the journey is not the priority at the moment since my situation has left me floating through space without gravity holding me down.
The three people who just exited the spacecraft glance at one another as they attempt to make sense of the situation. Two of them continue to stare at me in awe, while the third person surveys their surroundings anxiously, as if searching for something crucial before time runs out. This frantic behavior seems odd, as we're clearly not within Earth's atmosphere and there aren't apparent restrictions on time or resources.
"Oh thank god you found her!" shouts Captain Mora excitedly as he grabs onto my shoulder tightly in relief while the two others standing beside him stare confusedly up at him wondering why he would say such a thing when it appears I am human. "She wasn't actually human after all," Mora quickly explains when he notices his crew members' confused expressions, "she's trans-species!"
"Huh?" says one crew member dumbfoundedly, "So she was born as a human but wants to identify herself as another species instead?"
"No," answers another crew member shaking his head, "She was born transgender."
The revelation hangs heavy in the air, a palpable tension radiating from the bewildered crew members. I can sense their hesitation, their uncertainty about how to respond. Captain Mora, ever the diplomat, steps forward to address the confusion etched on their faces.
"No, no, you misunderstand," he explains, his voice calm but firm. "Trans-species means that she possesses the unique ability to shift between different forms and species at will. It's a rare genetic mutation that only a few individuals possess."
Understanding slowly dawns on the crew members, their eyes widening with a mix of curiosity and awe. They cast furtive glances in my direction, seemingly apprehensive yet intrigued by this newfound knowledge. A flurry of questions dances unspoken between them, their minds grappling to comprehend the implications of my existence.
The one who first spoke, his name badge reads 'Mason', steps forward hesitantly. His eyes search mine, seeking some form of confirmation or permission to ask the questions burning on his tongue. I simply nod, encouraging him to speak.
"What does it feel like?" Mason finally blurts out, his voice laced with a mix of fascination and trepidation. "To be able to shift into different species, to transcend the boundaries of what it means to be human?"
I pause, considering how to articulate an answer. After a moment of reflection, I respond softly, allowing my own vulnerability to be unveiled.
"It's both exhilarating and terrifying," I confess, a wistful smile playing at the corners of my lips. "Imagine being able to experience the world through the senses of a bird in flight, or to marvel at the depths of the ocean as a dolphin. It's a gift, no doubt, but it can also be isolating. Always being an outsider, never fully belonging to any one species."
The crew members listen intently, their apprehension replaced by curiosity and empathy. It is clear they are eager to understand, to bridge the gap between divergent experiences. In their eyes, I see a glimmer of the unity we might find together amidst the vast expanse of the universe.
Just as the conversation begins to deepen into more profound revelations, a hazy alarm blares through the ship's intercom, jolting us all out of our reverie. The crew members exchange worried glances, their eyes filled with a renewed sense of urgency.
Without needing to voice their concerns, I instinctively know the ship is somehow linked to my presence here. An invisible bond has formed between us, intertwining our fates.
"Captain Mora, what's happening?" I inquire, my voice tinged with genuine concern. "Is something wrong?"
Mora's eyes meet mine, a mixture of determination and regret flickering beneath their surface. "We can explain everything," he assures me, his grip on my shoulder tightening. "But first, we need to get out of here. It's not safe."
As we hurriedly make our way back inside the ship, the three crew members quickly relay their findings to me. According to their analysis, the moment I sent out the distress signal, it triggered a chain reaction, activating dormant technology within their ship. Unbeknownst to them, their vessel was designed to detect and respond to trans-species beings like myself in moments of distress.
"This ship," Mason explains, his eyes wide with realization, "it was meant to find and assist individuals like you. But it also holds secrets that we are just beginning to uncover."
Together, we navigate the labyrinthine corridors of the ship, each step unveiling a new mystery waiting to be unraveled. As we delve deeper into the heart of the vessel, the crew members unveil the extent of their unexpected journey and entangle me further in its enigmatic grasp.
With every revelation, the line between human and trans-species blurs, and the boundaries of what is known and unknown stretch thin. In the face of the vastness of the universe, I realize that our destinies have intertwined, and together, we must decipher the secrets that await us, before they unravel the very fabric of existence.
