Romanus' Call to Joy
·
Published 3/12/2023Brooding Romanus journeys back in time to a mysterious 3rd century BCE to uncover the secrets of reconciling his traumatic past and discovering the beauty of life's lightheartedness - or risk being lost to the whimsical fantasy world forever.
For the longest time I had been trapped in the past.
I went back to learn more about myself, but instead I learned more about what I have lost.
When I was a kid my mother used to tell me stories about the old Roman Empire.
Her favorite was always the story of Jugurtha, the King of Numidia who was eventually defeated by Marius and Sylla.
My mother told me that he would have won if it wasn't for those two.
She said that's why we should never trust generals.
They are greedy and power hungry and will always betray you if they see a chance to gain something from it.
"You should always stay away from people like that - they do not deserve your trust", she used to say to me every night as we sat next to each other on her bed.
"But how could you know? It is so hard to tell good people from bad ones."
"Oh, Romanus!" She laughed "It is very easy, you just have to look at their past."
"So there are no good people?"
"There are many good people out there, honey! But it's the bad ones you have to watch out for."
That was when I was 6 years old, now I'm 22 and I don't know if I can trust anyone anymore.
