It was midday, and the sun beat down on the cobblestones as I walked along the street. My feet hurt, and my head ached. It had been a bad morning, starting with an argument with Francis over his habit of leaving his dirty clothes all over the place, then being late for work, and then falling over in front of dozens of people when I tripped on a loose stone in the street. Oh, how I wish I were at home right now, drinking some tea and relaxing.
I passed a group of young men standing outside the tavern. They started to yell something at me but fortunately I didn't hear what they said as I kept walking. I glanced at them out of the corner of my eye, wondering what they wanted with me anyway. They looked like they were just drunk and looking for trouble; maybe they were just making fun of me because I was dressed so frumpily today. Perhaps it was because my skirt was worn through at the knees or that my boots were scuffed or that my hair was pulled back tightly into a bun. Who knows? No matter now - there's no point thinking about it anymore.
I sighed as I saw a crowd gathered around something in front of one of the shops: another dead dog perhaps? Or maybe someone had been injured? My curiosity got the better of me, and I stepped forward to see what it was. There was a man lying there on a bed made from pieces of wood covered by a blanket, with his eyes closed. A woman stood next to him, with her arm around his shoulders. She bent down to whisper something in his ear before she kissed him gently on the cheek; then she turned towards the crowd and announced: "My husband is going to make you all healthy again."
A murmur went through the crowd; some people seemed sceptical while others looked eager to believe her words. The man on the bed - her husband - opened his eyes and looked at her lovingly before he spoke: "I would like to tell you all about how we were able to cure many illnesses here in our town with natural remedies."
"We?" asked someone from the crowd. "Who is 'we'?"
"My wife and myself," replied the man simply. "Many years ago, when we were young, we moved from our city to live in this town where we thought we could find happiness together."
A flush came over his face as he smiled at his wife before he continued: "But we soon learned that life here wasn't easy for us since we weren't well-known here, unlike in our city where our family name gave us power and respect." He sighed nostalgically for a moment before he continued: "We also learned that there are dangers in this town which we don't know about: dangers that destroyed our dreams."
The woman nodded sadly while wiping away tears from her eyes; she put her hand on her husband's shoulder before she spoke: "After many years of struggle here in this town where even our best efforts did not help very much - because people here were more interested in drinking ale than eating wholesome food - we decided to leave this town and return to our city where once again we could try to forget about these problems."
She laughed bitterly for a moment before she added: "But then we discovered that our problems followed us home! We returned to our old house only to find it deserted and destroyed by thieves who had taken everything they could carry away! We found nothing left behind except some dirty clothes lying all over the floor! We almost went crazy after seeing this destruction!" She paused for a moment before she continued: "It was then that God sent us help!" She glanced up suddenly into the sky above them before she added: "He sent us help through nature!" She pointed towards the sky above them before she continued: "God sent us help through plants!"
