Anya sat in her room, staring at the book in her hands. She had been reading it for hours, but the words on the page refused to make sense. It was as if they were written in a language she couldn't understand.

Frustrated, Anya tossed the book aside and flopped back onto her bed. She had been feeling strange lately, like something was building up inside of her. She couldn't quite explain it, but it made it hard to concentrate on anything.

Suddenly, there was a knock at her door. "Anya? Are you okay in there?" It was Mrs. Jenkins, the woman who ran the orphanage where Anya lived.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Anya called back, sitting up on her bed.

"Alright then," Mrs. Jenkins said. "Dinner will be ready soon."

Anya nodded to herself as Mrs. Jenkins's footsteps receded down the hallway. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up, brushing off her dress. Maybe some food would help clear her head.

As she walked down the stairs towards the dining room, Anya could hear snippets of conversation from the other children who lived at the orphanage.

"...and then he said I'd never be good enough!"

"...I don't want to go to school tomorrow! The other kids are so mean..."

Anya frowned as she listened to their thoughts. It wasn't something she meant to do; it just happened sometimes. Ever since she had started feeling strange, she had noticed that she could hear what people were thinking.

She shook her head and tried to focus on walking down the stairs without tripping over her own feet.

As Anya entered the dining room and took a seat at one of the long tables, a thought suddenly popped into her head: What if I can control what people think?

The idea sent a thrill through Anya. She had always felt so powerless, but if she could control what people thought, then maybe she could change things.

Anya spent the rest of dinner lost in thought, barely touching her food. She was too busy imagining all the ways she could use her newfound power to get what she wanted.

After dinner, Anya made her way back up to her room. She closed the door behind her and sat down on the bed, taking a deep breath.

"Okay," she said to herself. "Let's give this a try."

Anya closed her eyes and focused on the thoughts of one of the other children at the orphanage. She reached out with her mind and tried to push a new thought into their head.

Suddenly, there was a knock at Anya's door. Startled, she opened her eyes and looked towards the door.

"Anya? Are you in there?" It was Mrs. Jenkins again.

"Yeah, I'm here," Anya called back.

"Is everything alright? I thought I heard something."

Anya bit her lip nervously. Had someone heard her?

"I'm fine," she said finally. "Just... reading."

"Well, alright then," Mrs. Jenkins said. "Lights out in ten minutes."

As soon as Mrs. Jenkins's footsteps faded away, Anya let out a sigh of relief. That was close.

She stood up from the bed and walked over to the mirror hanging on the wall across from it. Anya stared at her reflection for a moment before closing her eyes and focusing once again on one of the other children at the orphanage.

She reached out with her mind and pushed a new thought into their head: You should be nicer to Anya.

Anya opened her eyes and waited anxiously for something to happen.

The next day at breakfast, Anya couldn't help but smile as she watched one of the other children offer to share their cereal with her. It was working.

Anya spent the next few days experimenting with her new power, subtly influencing the thoughts of those around her. She made one of the other children apologize for something they had said to Mrs. Jenkins and convinced another child to let her have the last cookie.

But as Anya's powers grew stronger, she found it harder and harder to control them. Thoughts began flooding into her mind unbidden, overwhelming her senses.

One afternoon, as Anya was walking through the orphanage's garden, she suddenly froze in place. The sound of a bird singing in a nearby tree filled her mind, drowning out all other thoughts.

Without thinking, Anya reached out with her mind and tried to silence the bird's song. To her surprise, it worked. The bird stopped singing and flew away.

Anya smiled to herself. Maybe this power wasn't such a bad thing after all.

But as time went on, Anya found it increasingly difficult to separate her own thoughts from those of others. She would hear someone say something mean about her in their head and lose control, lashing out at them without thinking.

The other children at the orphanage began to notice that something was off about Anya. They started giving her strange looks and whispering behind her back.

One day, as Anya was walking down the hallway towards the bathroom, she heard two of the older boys talking in one of the rooms she passed by.

"Have you seen what she can do?" one of them said.

"Yeah," replied the other boy. "It's like she can read minds or something."

Anya felt a surge of panic rise up inside of her. They knew. Her secret was out.

She hurried into the bathroom and locked herself in one of the stalls, trying to calm herself down. But no matter how hard she tried to push away their thoughts, they kept flooding in, overwhelming her.

Anya sank down onto the bathroom floor and buried her face in her hands. She couldn't do this anymore. She had to find a way to stop it.

Just then, there was a knock at the bathroom door. "Anya? Are you in there?"

It was Mrs. Jenkins.

"Yeah, I'm here," Anya called back, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Is everything alright? You've been in there for quite a while."

Anya took a deep breath and stood up from the floor. She opened the door and stepped out into the hallway, looking up at Mrs. Jenkins with determined eyes.

"No," she said firmly. "Everything is not alright."
