The day was a scorcher. The sun beat down on the dry grass, turning it into a golden-brown carpet. The wind was still and hot, languidly affecting the flowers in the field.
Across from me sat Sir Snargle. His armor gleamed in the sunlight; a large, metallic helmet with two curved horns jutting out from the sides stared menacingly at me. I could see his eyes through the eye holes, watching me intently. A faint smile crept across his face as he put away his scale map of England.
"This is going to be quite an adventure." He remarked, leaning back and crossing his arms behind his head as he looked up at the sky. A few clouds drifted lazily beneath their larger counterparts, but they were far away and probably wouldn't move into this heat-wave region any time soon.
I didn't say anything, instead pulling my cloak closer to my body and peering over the edge of our lookout point down into the valley below us. It was serene; there were no signs of human life anywhere in sight. A river ran through it, winding its way between lush green trees that were laden with fruits too high to reach from where we were standing. Birds chirped in the distance as insects buzzed around them. It would have been a nice scene to marvel at if it weren't for the fact that we were so close to death's door that I could taste it on my tongue.
"Do you remember your instructions?" Snargle asked rhetorically, "Not *that* you're going to forget them any time soon... but I want to make sure we're all on the same page." He continued with a chuckle as he stroked his beard thoughtfully. "Let's see... We are to find King John's stolen relic from Westminster Abbey and return it before it can be used to secure an alliance with France."
"I know that part." I said exasperatedly, holding up my hand like a child in school who knew the answer to a question before it was even asked. "I just don't see how we're going to do it! That's not even all of our orders! We need to get rid of King John's suspected emissary, who is probably already at Westminster Abbey!" I added angrily, throwing my hands up in frustration.
Snargle looked affronted. He stood up quickly and began pacing around the edge of our lookout point while rubbing his chin thoughtfully with his hand. "Well... yes... that's true..." He replied slowly after thinking for a moment. "But let's focus on one thing at a time..." He trailed off, continuing his pacing as he continued muttering to himself under his breath before stopping abruptly and turning back towards me with wide eyes as though he had just figured something out. "Wait... that could work!" He exclaimed happily as he jumped down from our lookout point onto the ground directly below us and started walking briskly towards another stand of trees a ways away from us where four other people stood waiting for him patiently. "That could definitely work!"
