"What does it mean to be human?" I asked myself that question as I stood in front of the door. My hands were shaking, and my heart was pounding. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, then opened them again. "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." Those were the three rules we were taught as kids. I had just broken one of them. I knew that if I did this, I could get into trouble – so much trouble. But I had to know what was on the other side of that door. It had always been in the back of my mind since the first time I heard about it—the forbidden room, the secret place where they kept human bodies.
We didn't talk about it, but we all knew it was there. They're going to know it was me. They'll make me leave. I looked around nervously, but nobody seemed to notice me standing there in front of the door, trying to decide what to do next. The other Martians moved quickly and quietly past me, focused on their tasks for the day: some working in the hydroponic gardens or tending to the bacteria colonies; others studying in their classrooms or doing physical training at the gymnasium; and a handful beginning their journey home for today's rest period.
It must be nearly time for rest period, I thought to myself as I glanced up at Mars' red sun through the window above me. Just a few more minutes, then everyone will be leaving. I looked back down at the door, then back up at Mars' sun once more before making my decision and placing my hand on the scanner panel next to the door. As soon as my hand made contact with the panel, it scanned my palm print, confirming my identity and unlocking the door with a slight hiss as it slid open revealing a long corridor on the other side.
Please let me get away with this, I silently prayed as I steeled myself for another quick scan of my palm print through a second scanner panel just inside the secret corridor and walked into what turned out to be a storage room filled with crates containing new supplies from Earth. There were several doors leading out from this room, but none of them would trigger any alarms if someone else entered during the rest period when all of us were supposed to be sleeping in our quarters until awakened by our Watcher robots in exactly eight hours' time. So instead, I went over and pulled a large crate across the entrance to the corridor, blocking anyone else from coming through while also hiding myself even further away from prying eyes as I waited for the rest period to end. A few minutes later, a loud klaxon sound blasted through every corner of Mars Base, signaling that it was now time for everyone to lie down and go into hibernation mode until the next morning when our Watcher robots would wake us up to continue our daily tasks.
As people began drifting into their quarters for the rest period, I slid down against the wall behind some more crates and tried not to think about how tired and sleepy I felt after working hard all day at one of the hydroponic gardens. With all of these extra crates stacked up here, it was unlikely anyone would even notice me slumped against them while they made their way home tonight or during breakfast tomorrow morning – as long as they weren't actively looking for me or anyone else who was supposed to be there!
After an hour or so, I was the only one left awake out of hundreds. Everyone was either asleep or on their way home – except for me! On Mars, we had strict rules about privacy; for instance, you never entered someone else's private quarters without permission, and you never asked too many questions when someone told you something personal. These rules seemed reasonable enough when you're little, but once you reach adulthood like me, they start to seem more ridiculous. Especially if you want answers or suspect someone of deceit! Nevertheless, these rules existed for good reasons: they kept us safe and protected us from ourselves, ensuring young people didn't inadvertently get into trouble or cause harm.
Suddenly, there was a sound behind me: footsteps approaching down the corridor as someone picked up one of those crates and moved it aside, making their entrance through this hidden passage.
My heart jumped into my throat as I quickly scrambled to my feet, pressing my back against the crates. The footsteps grew louder, closer. Panic surged through me, but I forced myself to stay calm, to hide any sign of apprehension. I had come this far, and I wasn't about to back down now.
The figure emerged from the darkness, their silhouette backlit by the dim lights of the storage room. It was a woman in a technician's uniform, her hair pulled back into a tight bun. She held a small device in her hand, scanning the crates with an intensity that made my pulse race. Who was she? What was she doing here?
She moved methodically, her gaze sweeping across the room, stopping momentarily on the crate I had moved to block the corridor entrance. My mind raced, desperately searching for an explanation that could keep me out of trouble. With every passing second, my anxiety grew, threatening to consume me.
Then, as if by some miracle, her attention shifted. She seemed satisfied with her scan and moved on, inspecting the other crates with the efficiency of a seasoned professional. I let out a silent sigh of relief, my body sagging against the crates.
After what felt like an eternity, the woman finally seemed to be satisfied with her inspection. She turned to leave, disappearing back down the corridor from whence she came. I let out a shaky breath, realizing that I had been holding it the entire time. The danger had passed, at least for now.
With renewed determination, I pushed past my fear and curiosity began to take hold once more. I needed to find answers. I needed to discover what was hidden behind the forbidden door. Leaving the safety of my hiding spot, I carefully removed the crate from the entrance and set off down the secret corridor.
The air grew colder as I ventured deeper into the unknown. My footsteps echoed eerily as I made my way through the dimly lit passages. The metallic walls seemed to close in around me, the weight of secrecy and risk pressing against my chest. But I pressed on, my desire for knowledge overpowering any lingering doubts.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I reached the end of the corridor. Before me stood a sturdy iron door, adorned with strange symbols and a single word etched in an ancient language. Intrigue and trepidation coiled within me as I tentatively reached out to touch the cold metal.
As soon as my hand made contact with the door, a surge of energy coursed through my body. It was as if the door itself had awakened, recognizing me, inviting me in. The symbols on the door shimmered and glowed, shifting into a familiar pattern, revealing a keyhole at the center.
Suddenly, a voice filled the corridor, resonating with a chilling authority. "Only the true seekers may enter. Those who seek knowledge and understand the consequences of truth."
My heart pounded in my chest as I reached into my pocket and retrieved a small key, an heirloom passed down through generations. It was time to uncover the secrets hidden within these walls—an eerie fusion of excitement and unease swept over me.
With trembling hands, I inserted the key into the lock and turned it. The door creaked open, revealing a world shrouded in darkness and the unknown. Stepping forward, I hesitated at the threshold, the weight of my decision settling upon me.
I took a deep breath, embracing the uncertainty that lay before me. Whatever awaited on the other side of this door, it would forever alter my perception of what it meant to be human. And as I stepped into the abyss, my quest for truth began.
