I always think back to that day when everything changed for me. It was a typical rainy afternoon in Tokyo and I decided to just go home early from work because my boss wasn't in his office anyway and there was no point staying there longer than necessary. On my way out of the building, I took my umbrella from the stand near the door and ventured into the rain outside.

The storm began to subside as soon as I left the building behind me and walked down the countless steps towards the underground station where I could take the subway home. The wet streets were barely populated at that time of day anyway, so it was almost empty enough for me to forget about my umbrella and leave it at home as well on any other given day after work as this one had been until then. But today something caught my eye and made me decide against doing so despite risking getting wet all over again on my way home through Tokyo's endless rain puddles: A young woman stood beneath an awning directly across from me while she was talking into her cell phone with her back turned to me like every other soul around us on that street corner in front of the subway station entrance.

The rain had stopped now, but she didn't seem to notice that fact or care about it in any way anymore either as she continued her conversation even though she could continue it perfectly well without raising her voice in an otherwise silent street corner right next to a bustling subway station which must have been quite irritating for anyone else waiting nearby with their own cell phones switched off or put away while they were going about their daily activities during lunch break or any other time where they needed a moment of quiet...

That's when another idea struck me: What would happen if someone told her exactly what he thought about her behavior? Would she stop acting so annoying or would she just ignore him? Or would she even start screaming louder than before if he chose to confront her in public? Wouldn't it be great if someone did exactly that? If someone dared to talk back to her? You bet it would! That's precisely what I would do! This woman had no respect for other people around her! She didn't even care how loud she screamed into her cell phone! She needed to hear what most other people wouldn't say because they were too afraid of losing their jobs or whatever consequences might follow! People should start telling others how they genuinely feel about them! People should speak up more often! They shouldn't allow themselves to be silenced by other people anymore! They should stop being such cowards who only dare to express their distaste behind closed doors instead of addressing the issue face-to-face with the person involved whenever possible! People should show more courage every once in a while and confront situations that leave them frustrated, rather than remaining silent out of fear.

My adrenaline surged as I looked across the street at that woman making a scene right there in front of everyone while talking on the phone. It appeared as if she was spewing her disgust about someone towards the other person on the call, while simultaneously ignoring my disapproving gaze. These thoughts emboldened me, filling me with more resolve to confront her for the peace of everyone else present. She continued her tirade until finally breaking out into laughter, causing bewildered glances from passersby.

In that moment, another voice pierced through the air, demanding "SHUT UP ALREADY!" We all scanned our surroundings for the source but couldn't locate it right away, leading to people exchanging puzzled looks amongst one another. Another voice chimed in, shouting "WE CAN'T HEAR OUR OWN VOICES ANYMORE!" Now, we realized that this protest came from somewhere above, perhaps residents in the nearby buildings had become fed up and decided to voice their frustrations finally.

Suddenly, it dawned upon us- those voices represented the sentiments of those who had lost their ability to express themselves in the world, drowned out beneath the cacophony of others. A storm of whispers echoed inside our minds, repeating "SHUT UP ALREADY!" and "WE CAN'T HEAR OUR OWN VOICES ANYMORE." It felt as though those whispers silently cried out for autonomy, striving to maintain their individuality amidst a world that continually tried to silence them. To escape this sensation, we closed our eyes, desiring nothing more than quietude and a release from these persisting voices that seemed determined to remind us of our struggle for personal freedom, even beneath Tokyo's vast sky of dark clouds demanding attention by screaming louder than ever before.
