Amidst the hostile arid expanse, our journey continued - an endless path that stretched before us, obscured by relentless dunes. In the vanguard of our wandering party were Eross, Thrusk, and Meed, engrossed in their idle chatter. Though they were unaware, I was earnestly squinting past them, desperately casting my gaze upon the infinite sandy void, yearning for a sight different to the monotonous terrain. Yedrik trailed us, a step slower than the rest, his fatigue evident in his gait.
In Yedrik's countenance, one could see the longing to be at the forefront, engaging in conversation, but his naturally reticent disposition cast him as a mere observer, content to stay in the backdrop. Our rapport wasn't built on sentimentality, but there was something endearing about the irritable glare he threw my way when fatigue governed his actions, making it difficult not to turn around and gauge his reactions periodically.
Our march pressed on, the biting sandstorm acting as a grim entertainer against the backdrop of elemental severity. The storm stubbornly crept closer with each passing moment. Despite this threat, Eross assured us that an oasis awaited us just beyond the horizon. A sanctuary from the storm, or would we have the misfortune of walking right into its heart?
After an enduring tussle with the searing desert winds, we were welcomed by the tranquil embrace of our much coveted oasis. Underneath the cool shade of generously leafed palm trees, we collected precious life-sustaining water gathered within their hollows during the rare freezing winter nights. Alas, our respite was short-lived, for nourishing tomorrow's meal required us to return to hunting once we recovered our strength. Eros's sudden gesticulation towards the hazy horizon disrupted our brief period of tranquility.
With mystification etched plainly on our faces, our party watched the spectacle unfold–a solitary figure under the merciless desert sun, inexplicably observing us from afar. Yedrik eventually shattered the tense silence, "Is he part of our tribe?"
"I don’t know," Eross conceded, his words failing to stem the unease spreading among us. "But he doesn’t look like any human I’ve ever seen."
"He looks bizarre," contributed Thrusk, fingering his scalp in apparent anxiety. "Look at those arms! They're twice as big as mine!"
Eross chuckled at the statement, "No wonder why you don't have any kids yet!". This quip elicited robust laughter from all except Yedrik who responded by hitting Thrusk - creating a ripple of amusement among us and momentarily distracting us from the looming enigma on the horizon.
The tranquility of our haven was shattered yet again by a conflict between Thrusk and Yedrik that erupted into physical strife. Meed stepped in valiantly, disregarding her own safety in her attempts to separate the feuding pair. Once she succeeded, she rewarded Yedrik with an affectionate pat on his head, corroborating the unspoken bond growing steadily between them. Amid the newly found peace, Thrusk, nursing no hard feelings, began laughing again, prompting Yedrik to concur, “Yes, we are crazy.”
Meed furthermore directed a defiant gesture at Thrusk, met by roars of laughter from the group, tinting the peculiar situation with hilarity. Thrusk fought back at the perceived slander to his image, provoking a physical altercation once more, this time involving Meed. Eross tried to intervene, but the brawl escalated further with Yedrik rushing in to join the fray. Thus, what had been a serene hiatus amid our exodus transformed into a tumultuous scene of vigorous altercations muttered through collective laughter.
As the chaos of our internal squabble subsided, we turned our attention back to the stranger in the distance, who had now drawn closer. It was only then that we noticed the peculiar artifacts adorning his body. His neck was adorned with a necklace made of shimmering crystals, catching the sunlight and casting a mesmerizing glow. And around his waist, he wore a belt fashioned from the bones of some unknown creature, the white splinters contrasting against his dark skin.
Eross, always the curious one, stepped forward cautiously, his eyes fixed on the stranger. "Greetings," he called out, his voice carrying over the oasis. "Who are you, and what brings you to this forsaken land?"
The stranger's gaze lingered on each one of us, his lips curling into a smile that seemed to hold a secret. "I am called Karnak," he finally answered. "I come from a faraway land, searching for answers and knowledge."
Yedrik, ever the skeptic, crossed his arms over his chest and frowned. "What kind of answers do you seek out here in the desert?"
Karnak's eyes sparkled with a hidden wisdom as he replied, "The secrets of the ancient civilizations that once thrived in these very sands. My studies have led me here, to the heart of the desert, where I believe a forgotten city lies buried beneath the dunes."
Thrusk, his anger momentarily forgotten, leaned forward with anticipation. "A forgotten city? Are you telling us there's more to this barren wasteland than meets the eye?"
Karnak nodded, his gaze filled with excitement. "Indeed, my friends. There is more to this desert than just sand and harsh winds. Deep within its heart lies a treasure trove of knowledge, waiting to be discovered."
Meed, captivated by Karnak's words, spoke softly. "Is that why you observe us from a distance? Are you waiting for our help?"
Karnak's smile widened, almost conspiratorial. "Yes, my dear Meed. I have been watching your journey, and I believe fate has brought us together for a reason. I need your expertise, your courage, and your curiosity to uncover the secrets that lay buried beneath our feet."
Eross, never one to shy away from adventure, stepped forward. "Count us in, Karnak. We came here seeking something different, something beyond the monotony of our lives. If there's a hidden city waiting to be found, we won't back down."
Yedrik remained skeptical, but the glimmer of intrigue shone in his eyes. "But what do we stand to gain from this venture?"
Karnak's smile turned enigmatic. "Knowledge, Yedrik. Knowledge that could change the course of history, and perhaps even our own destinies."
And so, with the stranger, Karnak, leading the way, our party set off into the uncharted depths of the desert, united by a common purpose and a thirst for discovery. As we ventured into the unknown, we couldn't help but feel the weight of anticipation and the allure of the ancient secrets that lay just beyond our reach. Little did we know that this journey would test not only our strength and friendship but also push the boundaries of what we believed to be possible. The forgotten city awaited, and within its walls, we would uncover truths that would forever change our perception of the world.
