I awaken in a cold sweat, thoroughly drenched.

"It was just a dream," I reassure myself as I look around my room. The same nightmare has been haunting me every night for the past few weeks, and it's starting to take its toll on me.

I glance over at my phone, seeing that it is now nearly 5:30 AM. As the sun starts to rise outside the apartment window, I roll back onto my side and stare at the photos on my wall. Smiling faces from my family beam back at me. They have always been there for me throughout my life, especially during the difficult times. Since my dad passed away when I was ten years old, both my mom and sister have supported me consistently. They may live four hours away from me in Ohio, but their presence remains with me through everything.

My family doesn't know about the investigation I'm conducting. After all, if you've read my previous articles, you know what happened last year between me and Jack - we were childhood best friends. Despite unimaginable suffering due to the sudden loss of his father, Jack had shown immense resilience. However, moving to Munich offered an opportunity for both of us to reshape our lives.

Following a rough start, we eventually settled in our new careers in Munich. Unfortunately, we couldn't prevent the creeping sense of loneliness and unhappiness from overtaking our lives. It became progressively worse for Jack, who contended with overwhelming depression. We hoped that adapting to a new environment and being far away from home would provide a positive distraction.

Germany appeared to be the only feasible option because other European job prospects didn't offer as much promise or persuasiveness. Upon accepting our new roles, we made arrangements for the flight, encountering several obstacles, including travel delays and a few adjustments in our planned schedules.

When we finally arrived in Munich, we experienced a mix of anxiety, stress, and relief. What lay ahead for us in this new city remained uncertain, but we knew that embracing change could potentially lead to better days for both of us. The fact that we understood the importance of acknowledging and coping with mental health challenges played a significant role in our journey.

Our shared experiences, including mourning the loss of our fathers from a young age, had shown us how untreated feelings of depression could cause immense emotional distress. Acknowledging these feelings as part of our friendship revealed the strength and courage we found together throughout our lives.
