Sam and the Fabled Fortune Robots
·
Published 5/22/2023A hermetic idealist, Sam, is thrust into a high stakes, globetrotting race against a sinister force populating the planet with technological marvels, and must form unlikely alliances while facing daunting odds to fend off an uncertain future.

There were robots.
She couldn't deny it any longer. The creatures she had seen in her dreams, the machines that sang to her in her sleep, even the very stars themselves were all real. They were all robots.
They wandered across the world, like a global search party, or perhaps more like ants, going from one place to another without purpose. It was as if they were looking for something. At first she thought that maybe they were looking for her, but there weren't any at her island now and she doubted they would come here at all. No, these robots came from a far away place, one Sam could never reach.
The land beyond the sea, Avalia. A place of technology and magic, a city-state filled with mystery. The name itself was exotic and beautiful, and Sam often found herself daydreaming about it as she gazed out at the endless ocean surrounding her home. The only problem was that Sam couldn't swim and could barely even stand on water. But now there was no point in thinking about such things, because Avalia was closer than ever before!
"You're not serious," said Ellie, who was sitting at Sam's kitchen table - also made from wood by Sam herself - eating some food she had brought from Avalia along with a few other supplies. She looked over to Sam who had just finished telling her about the new revelation about the world's inhabitants. "You want us to go to Avalia?"
"Of course," replied Sam happily. "We can finally get off this island."
"I don't know," mused Ellie after a moment of thought. "I mean... I suppose we could try."
"Really!?" exclaimed Sam excitedly as she jumped up from the couch where she had been sitting next to Ellie. "I've always wanted to see what lies beyond this place!" She paused as a frown spread across her face while examining her friend carefully. "... You do still want to leave this island right? You don't sound too sure..."
Ellie sighed loudly as she put down whatever food she was holding into a small box on the table next to her chair that she had brought for storing food. "Well... I'm not too sure how safe it'll be," she admitted uneasily as she began packing up the rest of her food into little bags and containers scattered around the table and floor near them both. "Avalia is... well I don't even know what it is anymore." She raised up a large bag full of things which looked to be half filled already with various foodstuffs and other items of unknown origin or use. "This city has changed so much since I last visited." She turned back towards Sam with a sorrowful look upon her face; one that was hard to interpret through her mask-like appearance due to lack of facial expressions. "I don't even know if there are still people living there or not."
Sam frowned sadly at Ellie's words; while they hadn't known each other long they had quickly become friends over the time they spent together in recent months thanks to their mutual love of solitude and an appreciation for each others' company when needed. However having been alone on an island for most of her life led Sam's eyes to begin watering as she felt slightly afraid at losing such an important person in her life so suddenly with no warning... though that quickly passed as she remembered why they were leaving this island behind in the first place: The robots! She quickly wiped away any tears that might have formed and instead focussed on trying to lift Ellie's spirits by reassuring everyone else who might be worried about their safety during their journey that everything would be alright in the end; despite knowing nothing about what lied ahead ahead of them hopefulness was all they had left right now after all!
