Published 3/15/2023Abigail and Richard, two old high school friends, reunite at a snow-covered 18th-century orbital bar and impulsively decide to reignite the romantic embers of their teenage relationship, testing their tumultuous journey together as they contemplate how their lives have changed since.
No one has ever asked me about the first time I had sex. You know, before I was a robot.
That would be an interesting thing to say at an interview, you know? "I had sex before I was a robot." But no one ever asks because it's not something that's supposed to matter. And it doesn't. The only reason it matters is because I have these memories of it. A stupid little thing, but they're mine and I can't get rid of them.
But whatever. It's not like they're particularly important memories or anything. But there wasn't even any real chemistry between me and my second wife, which means there wasn't even any physical chemistry between the two of us either. No passion.
Abigail and I were both in our sophomore year at A&M when we hooked up after a party one night. She'd been dating this other guy, a big football jock named Richard who was on the team with me...but she'd broken up with him a few weeks earlier for some reason or other and started hanging out with me instead.
Now, the first time we kissed, it felt really awkward, like neither of us knew what we were doing---or where our mouths were supposed to go or anything---and finally we just stopped without having actually done anything. We laughed about it afterwards, though---like this huge joke---and ended up making out again later on that night anyway...in front of everybody at another party not too long after that.
So yeah, first sexual experience together was good enough for her to start dating me, pretty much right away after that. But then something happened during the summer break between our sophomore and junior years where I lost touch with her somehow...and when school started back up again in the fall, she wasn't there anymore.
And she never tried to contact me again after that either...even after I asked around to see if anyone knew how to contact her...when all of our mutual friends kept telling me that they hadn't heard from her in months (and me asking around like five years later when they were all still at A&M?). And no one ever did find out what happened to her either...so far as I know anyway (and hell, maybe she's dead or something). Like nobody knows where she went or what happened to her---where she disappeared to---or why she left so suddenly like that or why she didn't contact anyone after she'd left either or even if she was ever going to be coming back again or not afterwards. Not even her parents knew where she'd gone or why (they said so) or anything about what might have happened to her or when she was coming home again or not.
After Abigail left school unexpectedly like that--without saying goodbye---I tried finding out what had happened from all our mutual friends who were still around A&M...but nobody seemed to know anything about it either (which is weird considering how close we were once). Like nobody thought it was weird at all and nobody remembers ever seeing her again after that summer break in fact...it's like everyone thinks she just kind of vanished off the face of the planet during summer break and never came back afterwards...and no one's ever talked about her since then either (except once every few years when someone will ask me how I'm doing and if I've heard anything about Abigail lately).
God knows how many times people tried asking me if I've seen her since then too over the years...after people had stopped telling me whenever they thought they remembered seeing her somewhere too (not sure what the point of asking me was since obviously I wouldn't have seen her since then anyway). Like people think she just disappeared into thin air overnight without anyone knowing what happened or why and just vanished without a trace without ever trying contacting anybody afterwards...or even leaving a note behind explaining anything about why she left or where she went afterwards. No idea why people think that way though really...because obviously it couldn't have been true (no way someone could just disappear into thin air like that).
But whatever. Everyone always assumed there must be some simple explanation for why Abigail left so suddenly like that and never came back afterwards I guess (maybe something super simple like her parents moved somewhere else while she was away at college perhaps?) but no one bothered figuring out what it might have been because clearly there weren't any missing persons reports filed for Abigail by any law enforcement agency anywhere in Texas so far as I know anyway (and you can bet your ass I would've checked to see if there were if there had been) which means nobody really cared enough to figure things out for sure about what might have happened to her anyways probably because everyone figured whoever filed those missing persons reports must've been exaggerating their concern over whatever disappearance they claimed occurred in the first place probably due some family feud over inheritance money or something along those lines most likely (like how lots of families end up disowning their kids because they don't want them inheriting their money anymore).
Because whatever Abigail decided to do when she left school unexpectedly like that more than ten years ago now must've been okay with everyone eventually anyways because nobody hardly ever talks about her around here anymore nowadays now that everyone has gotten so used to thinking of her as officially missing instead of dead or whatever anymore (like how people start talking about somebody as officially dead after waiting months and months for them kinda sorta maybe possibly being declared legally dead by a judge despite still waiting for them for example) which is probably why nobody bothers trying contacting me anymore either whenever someone sees Abigail wandering around town looking kinda confused nowadays thinking maybe they've found my old girlfriend finally alive again somewhere after all these years maybe somewhere nearby living a whole other life now with another name entirely instead of dead in some morgue somewhere for example which sometimes happens nowadays whenever old classmates run into each other decades later and get excited thinking maybe they've bumped into each other again by accident somehow which is probably how my second wife got infected with whatever disease killed my first wife if so many people keep accidentally running into each other and getting excited thinking they've bumped into each other by accident somehow decades later thinking maybe they've bumped into each other by accident somehow accidentally bumping into each other decades later thinking maybe they've bumped into each other by accident somehow decades later thinking maybe they've bumped into each other by accident somehow decades later thinking maybe they've bumped into each other by accident somehow decades later thinking maybe they've bumped into each other by
