Stuart looked to the other animals around him. They were all standing in a circle, looking at each other with anxiety in their eyes. Stuart felt anxious, too, but he knew that showing it would be the worst thing he could do. He had to keep his spirits up and lead them on.
"Hey," said Stuart as loud as he could, "we're gonna win this battle."
A few of the animals nodded and took some steps forward. It was enough for Stuart to feel hopeful again.
"We can't give up now," he continued, "we've come so far." He put his paw on a small log lying on the ground and turned it around so the animals could see the scratches on its surface. "Remember what happened here? We were being chased by that evil little squirrel with a sword, but then we jumped over this log and he fell right into that pit trap we dug." A few more animals nodded again.
"Yeah!" shouted another animal next to him. "And remember how we caught that mean old frog? We used that net we made out of bark and twine! That was great!"
The other animals seemed to brighten up a bit when they heard about those stories. The frog in particular had been one of their most dangerous foes back when they still lived together peacefully underground, but they managed to get rid of him thanks to their ingenious ideas and teamwork. Now they were ready to face any challenge again and finally save their home from destruction at the paws of humans with their heavy machines.
Stuart looked around at the circle of animals again. There were still some looking nervous, but others were smiling with determination in their eyes. They really looked like they would follow him wherever he led them.
