The sun was shining brightly, its rays beating down on the walls of my house. I sat in a cushioned chair, enjoying the cool breeze that blew against my skin. A light knock at the door stirred me out of my daze.
"Honey, I'm home." My wife called from outside of our door.
I got up from my seat and walked to open our front door. "That was fast," I said as I let her in, feeling a bit dumbfounded by how quickly she made it back. I closed our door behind her and looked at her expectantly.
"Here." She handed me a small box wrapped in red paper with a large bow on top. "Happy anniversary."
"You're early." I took the box from her and set it down on the counter before wrapping my arms around her. She didn't return my embrace for more than a moment before pushing herself away from me and walking into the living room.
"Who wants a drink?" She called over her shoulder as she rummaged through our liquor cabinet.
"Me!" I called back excitedly, wondering what could be inside the mysterious box. I picked it up off of the counter and ripped off the wrapping paper to reveal a small jewelry box with a heart carved into it. The lid flipped open and revealed a silver ring with purple amethysts encircling it in every direction, their sparkles reflecting off of the light coming in through our window.
"You had this in here?" I asked incredulously, staring at her across the room as she handed my drink to me and pulled one for herself out of the cabinet. "How did you even know about this?"
"Oh, well-" she started to explain but cut herself off when we both heard a loud noise coming from outside our house. It sounded like... thunder? But there wasn't supposed to be any rain today... or any time soon for that matter. "What was that?"
We both stared out of our kitchen window as another loud boom shook our house from side to side. Another flash of lightening lit up the sky just outside of it, revealing tiny figures standing on top of cars, some holding their hands above their heads while others were simply crying hysterically in fear while they watched something else blow up outside. We looked at each other with wide eyes before turning back toward the window to watch several more flashes break through the dark sky above us, revealing an alien ship hovering over several buildings in town before landing on top of our own backyard shed!
