Meridy and the Trident

It all started when the sun went out.

I was around 12 years old, swimming in the ocean off the coast of Kent. I looked up to see it start. At first, it was barely noticeable; a little grayish in the sky, like a storm cloud. But then, gradually but quickly, it grew bigger and bigger until the whole sky was gray. My first thought was that some idiot had gotten into my mum's makeup cabinet again and bought something called "Eyeshadow" that he didn't realize was actually spray paint (or whatever) for a car and proceeded to spray paint his face with it upside down. Because nothing says fashion sense like that.

Then I remembered that we didn't have any idiots like that in Kent.

We were too posh for that kind of thing.

But then I saw the fishes swimming away from me and bizarrely going upwards towards where the sun used to be, and I knew something was not right with this picture.

"Mum!" I screamed as loud as I could underwater, "Mum! There's a problem!"

"What is it dear?" she shouted back at me. She was about a hundred yards away from me at the surface, staring at the darkening sky in awe.

"The fish are acting weird! They're going... upwards!!" I shouted even louder than before, pointing in the direction of where the sun should be. Unsurprisingly, she didn't notice anything odd going on there because she just kept staring at the sky as if it would suddenly light up again, eventually turning into its usual bright white glow we were so used to. I understood why she might have been concerned though; after all, if you have lived with an enormous lamp continuously emitting heat and light above your head for your entire life, you might be a little wary at seeing it go out too. And what if it never came back? What if this whole thing was just a prank pulled by those snobby kids who live up north somewhere? What if they had run out of stuff to do and decided they wanted their stupid little village to become famous by ruining our lives? Or maybe someone found out about how we were planning to invade their country next week and decided to send them a warning message? Whatever it was, no matter how unlikely or ridiculous it may sound, being told that your sun had gone out would probably make you think of crazy things like these too! So who could blame her for being so worried?

Of course she wouldn't believe me when I said more sensible things like "the fish are acting weird." Who the hell cared about some stupid fish anyway? It wasn't as if they could speak English or anything. Who cares about fish? They're just dumb animals any

But, after a brief moment of contemplation, I realized that the strange behavior of the fish might be an indication of something much larger taking place. Suddenly, it hit me that whatever caused the sun's disappearance might also be affecting the marine life, leading to their unusual actions. Perhaps the fish were desperately attempting to escape from the impending disaster – or maybe they sensed a change in the environment's balance due to the sun's absence.

With a renewed sense of urgency, I swam over to my mum and tried to explain my concerns, emphasizing that the fishes' abnormal behavior was worth considering as a crucial warning sign. Reluctantly, she agreed to take my observations into account, and together, we decided to investigate further.

The darkened sky and unexpected behaviors of the fish were just the beginning. As time went by, we discovered that a series of extraordinary events started to unfold throughout the world. These unprecedented occurrences shook the foundations of everything we thought we knew, forcing us to reevaluate our understanding of the universe itself.

Within moments, we had entered into uncharted territory. Venturing into the unknown brought forth a plethora of questions, doubts, and uncertainties that only seemed to grow larger and more complex with each passing day.

However, as we faced these massive upheavals and challenges together, our appreciation for adaptation and change deepened. Our journey into the unfamiliar opened up new possibilities, pushing the boundaries of what we could achieve and teaching us a valuable lesson: while change may be daunting at first, it can ultimately lead to newfound resilience and growth.

In conclusion, the sudden extinguishing of the sun – once thought to be the end of the world as we knew it – turned out to be a catalyst for discovery, adventure, and transformation. As we embraced the unexpected twists and turns of this fantastic journey, we learned that sometimes, in life's most extraordinary moments, there lies the potential for greatness.
