Akili's Cosmic Quest
·
Published 5/29/2023When innocent, cosmic-powered teen Akili explores his emerging desires with classmate Kamya, they uncover ancient secrets that force him on a spiritual quest to use his powers and save the world.

"I know what you're thinking," she said. She reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it gently. "But this isn't one of those stories."
"No?" He looked up at her. He wasn't sure if he was relieved or disappointed.
"No." She shook her head and smiled. "I'm not some mystical force sent to awaken your inner power. You can stop looking for the catch."
Akili chuckled. "What makes you think I was looking for a catch?"
Kamya's smile grew wider. "Because you're Akili." She leaned down and kissed him lightly on the lips, pulling back when he started to respond. "And because that's what they all think, at first."
He looked away from her and sighed. "I guess that's fair." His gaze fell to his phone in his lap, idly scrolling through Facebook newsfeeds. He had been avoiding answering Kamya's advances for days now, and it had become more and more difficult with each passing hour of the day. Today had been his breaking point, he was certain of it. He was so exhausted by trying to avoid the inevitable--and so irritated by how much it seemed to be affecting Kamya--that he'd finally caved in and told himself that if she tried to seduce him again, he wouldn't say no this time around. Whether he liked it or not, it was time to put an end to this absurd charade of his and get this over with once and for all.
She noticed him staring at the phone. "You don't have to do it right now," she said softly, reaching out once again and touching his hand lightly with hers before taking his phone from him and setting it aside on the table next to them as she sat down beside him on the couch in her room. "We can just talk tonight, if you want."
He heard the pleading tone in her voice and frowned slightly, looking over at her once again and raising an eyebrow as she took his hand between both of hers and began massaging gently. "You sound like you've been avoiding me," he said dryly, briefly enjoying the massage before pulling his hand away from her grasp. She didn't try to grab it back this time around; instead, she let out a small sigh of disappointment as he stood up from the couch and began pacing back and forth across the room beneath her gaze as she watched him silently from where she sat on the couch behind him.
"I haven't been avoiding you," she said after a moment's pause. Her voice sounded tired; defeated, even. It only served to irritate Akili further as he continued pacing back and forth across the room before turning around suddenly when he realized that he hadn't responded yet and that she was watching him expectantly now, waiting for an answer with growing impatience and irritation emanating from him like waves of heat. Kamya flinched visibly when he moved towards her, startled by his sudden approach. When she saw that there was no anger or rage in his movements, however, she relaxed as he kneeled down next to the couch and took one of her hands between both of his own.
"Kamya... What is this?" He held her hand tightly, forcing himself to meet her gaze despite the fear and uncertainty he felt inside. "Why are we dancing around each other like this? I feel like there's something more here, but we're both too scared to acknowledge it." His voice trembled slightly, betraying the weight of the emotions that threatened to spill forth.
"Yes," Kamya whispered back, her eyes filling with tears. Slowly, she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his, their passion finally seizing control. As they kissed, they felt both their individual fears and shared desires meld together, creating a connection stronger than either had ever experienced before. For the first time, they couldn't hide behind their doubts and hesitations, and instead found solace in the honesty of their emotions – a love that had grown between them, refusing to be held back any longer. Together, they embraced the vulnerability of their hearts and allowed their love to guide them forward, unsure of what the future might hold but knowing that as long as they had each other, they could face it bravely.
