The rain was pouring down harder than it ever did in Arkham. I could barely see my hand in front of me as the downpour filled my eyes with water and soaked through my clothes. You'd think that after all this time, I'd have found a better place to stay.
I took a couple steps forward and leaned up against the brick building. It was cold, but at least I wasn't out in the rain anymore. I pulled my hood back and shook off the water from my head and shoulders.
I looked across the street and saw Harley Quinn's Diner, apparently still open despite the weather calling for thunderstorms all day. I walked towards it, dodging puddles left in the streets by passing cars. There were only a few people in the diner, which I thought was odd since it was drier in there than outside. The waitress greeted me as I entered, "Hello! How may I help you?" she said cheerfully. She wore black pants and a Harley Quinn t-shirt with her hair tied back into pigtails.
"Just a coffee," I said, sitting down at an empty table near the door. A man sat alone with his head buried deep in his laptop. A couple was laughing together at one table while another woman sat alone with her head resting against her arms on her table. The waitress brought over my coffee and smiled before she walked away to take care of another table at the other side of the room.
I took a sip of coffee and sighed in relief as warmth flowed through my chest, relaxing me a bit more after a stressful day being released from prison. Since then, I've been staying at a hotel downtown but it's no fun living alone and Harley's always been nice to me so I probably will go there next month when my money runs dry again.
As if on cue, Harley entered wearing her usual outfit of black shorts, corset top and fishnets with boots covered in studs like mine. She surveyed the room before making her way over to me with a smile on her face. "Hey Sweetie," she said getting closer and kissing me on the cheek before sitting down across from me at the table. She looked around slowly before leaning forward towards me, "You know *you're* supposed to call *me*, right?" she said playfully, raising an eyebrow at me as she pulled out her phone from her pocket and glanced at it before putting it back away again.
"So...how's life?" she asked.
My gaze dropped to my hands holding onto the cup of coffee between them, struggling to find the words to answer her question. Just then, an explosion cut my train of thought short and made everyone in the diner panic, except for Harley and me, who remained relatively calm due to our history in Gotham City. The explosion seemed to originate from outside, and people were running into the restaurant seeking safety.
Harley raised an eyebrow in concern at my hesitation to answer her question but waited patiently for a response. After composing myself from the sudden calamity, I leaned forward towards Harley and answered, "It's..."
Another explosion sounded outside, causing further commotion amongst the diner patrons. Ignoring the chaos, I continued, "It's been tough since we broke away from the Joker, but I'm just trying to get by. With him gone, maybe we can finally move on together without his madness ruining our lives anymore."
Feeling the weight of the events that led to the Joker's demise, I suggested focusing on other things besides him, hoping that we could escape the darkness of our past and build a brighter future.
Harley listened to my words, her blue eyes filled with a mix of sadness and determination. She understood the weight that the Joker had carried in both of our lives, the toxic cycle we had been trapped in for so long. With a slow nod, she reached across the table and took my hand in hers.
"You're right," she said, her voice barely audible above the chaos outside. "It's time for us to move forward, to leave the past where it belongs." She squeezed my hand, her grip firm and reassuring. "We deserve better than this, better than the chaos and destruction that the Joker brought into our lives."
As she spoke, her eyes flicked towards the other patrons in the diner, still huddled together in fear. A determination sparkled in her gaze, and suddenly, I knew that she had a plan forming in her mind. Harley was never one to sit idly by and let life happen to her. She was an agent of change, a force to be reckoned with.
"Listen up, everyone!" she called out, projecting her voice above the clamor. The people in the diner looked at her, their eyes wide with anticipation. "We've all had enough of the Joker's madness. It's time to reclaim our lives, to rebuild what he's torn apart."
In that moment, it was as if the air in the room shifted. Conversations stilled, and all eyes were on Harley. She stood up, her charismatic energy pulling people in. "I'm starting a support group," she announced, her voice strong and determined. "For all of us who have been affected by the Joker's reign of terror. We'll help each other heal, find strength in one another, and build a new future."
Her words seemed to ignite a spark in the hearts of the diner's patrons. They exchanged hesitant glances before nodding, acknowledging the need for change. The couple that had been laughing together stood up, their faces set with determination. The woman who had been sitting alone lifted her head, her eyes shining with newfound hope.
Harley smiled, her infectious grin spreading across her face. "Together, we can overcome anything," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "No longer will we be defined by our past. We will create a community of support and strength, and we will thrive."
As the chaos outside subsided, the patrons in the diner formed a makeshift circle, their chairs pushed together. Harley took her place in the center, her hand still entwined with mine. We were no longer alone in our struggle.
In the days that followed, the support group grew. People from all walks of life joined, seeking solace and healing. Together, we supported one another through the dark moments, shared our stories of survival, and found kinship in our shared experiences. It was a long and difficult journey, but the strength we gained from one another sustained us. The wounds inflicted by the Joker slowly began to heal, replaced by scars that reminded us of our resilience.
Months turned into years, and the support group became a beacon of hope in Gotham City. Each meeting brought us closer, forging bonds that would last a lifetime. As the city healed, so did we - once broken souls, now embracing life's limitless possibilities.
Harley and I grew closer with each passing day, our love a constant source of strength. We found comfort in the fact that we had each other, a shared history that had forged an unbreakable connection. Together, we rebuilt our lives, creating a path filled with love, understanding, and a commitment to never let the darkness consume us again.
In the end, it was not the rain-soaked streets of Arkham that defined us, but the shared resilience in the face of adversity. And as we stood together, hand in hand, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would rise above them, bound by the indomitable strength of our spirits and the power of love.
