"I can't believe it. Why would she do that?"
"Beidou, look at me."
Beidou's eyes are wide and red and he looks like he is about to vomit. He's not looking at anyone in the bar, but instead staring out the window and into space. They're on the moon, so there is nothing to see but a few other bars and a taxi stand. Everything else is just dirt and rocks and some weird looking trees they call plants. What's wrong with him? It takes a lot to get Beidou to be this upset. Usually he laughs when people lose their shit. But this... this is different. He's hurting himself by thinking about what happened today. She was his best friend!
"Look at me." Marshalle says softly. She rests her hand on Beidou's shoulder until he looks down at her. Her eyes were also red from crying, but now they're dry as she tries to comfort Beidou. "She made her own choice."
"But it doesn't make sense!" Beidou collapses onto the table and buries his head in his hands, "She was supposed to live forever with me! We were supposed to be together forever! Why would she leave?!"
Marshalle sits in silence for a moment before answering calmly, "Because she knows what it means if you don't let go."
Beidou raises his head and stares at Marshalle blankly, "What do you mean?"
"If you watch her leave..." Marshalle pauses while she grabs a napkin from the table and wipes her eyes, then continues, "...if you watch her leave without saying anything... without trying to stop her... without being selfish for once in your goddamn life, then she will fade away."
Beidou crumples up the napkin in one hand tightly as he listens carefully to Marshalle's words, "...fade away?"
"As I am fading away myself." Marshalle brushes some of her short black hair behind one ear as she speaks, "It's been three years since we've met and we've only known each other for two months. You can't hold on to someone who wants to move forward into eternity."
Beidou looks down at the table again, "I don't understand why it has to be this way."
