Tides of Courage: Alex's Journey of Self-Discovery

Alex is a fourteen-year-old girl growing up in a small town near the sea in Western Europe. Facing the strict societal norms she finds no breathe as an individual in this town – leading her to act out in desperate measures.

Despite her seemingly rebellious character, Alex has a great talent for music which she uses to escape the reality of her current life. Every Monday she takes her jazz band to the nearby town theatre for practice and for a few hours is able to listen to the inner music of her soul in perfect harmony.

One particular evening she forgets to take an umbrella with her and decides to go out in the rain while walking back to her home. As she drenched on her way, she meets a talkative passerby, Caril. Caril shares his own coming-of-age story with her and gives her strength to go on. Alex's resilience inspired by Caril's story, she arrives at the theatre determined to take a stand against the chief who had unfairly discriminates against her and her jazz band.

In her resilience and determination, Alex is able to spark a rebellion against the chief and win the rights for her and her band to practice at the theatre. But like all episodes of coming of age stories, this victory opens up a new journey for Alex to embark upon. Having found her voice and unspoken strength found within her, it is no longer a matter of standing against traditions and breaking societal rules, but now understanding her inner power and worth as a person.

Though times have been decorated with bitter events, Alex's courage and confidence strike the chord of her inward and inspires her courage to take the next step in her journey. Alex’s story emphasizes the power of individualism and self-belief, and the beauty of life to a young reader, leaving them with a bittersweet feeling in the end.
