Jack's Heroic Mission
·
Published 1/24/2023Brave, heroic Jack, a warrior from Egypt in the 18th century, embarks on a daring mission to defy an oppressive, evil king and liberate a neighboring kingdom - but can he use his strength, determination, and heroic courage to overcome the obstacles and ultimately succeed?
There was no air to breathe. The heat crept into every pore of my skin and every corner of my mind. I wiped away the sweat from my brow, but more took its place. My horse was growing weary, but I couldn't allow him to rest. As soon as we stop, the king's army will catch up. Our only chance is to reach the resistance first.
"Keep going, boy," I said, patting his side. He whined, but kept moving. "We're almost there. Just a little further." I turned around, searching for any sign of the king's soldiers. There was nothing yet, but it wouldn't be long before they found us. The king's men were relentless, and always found their prey.
I turned back to my horse and noticed a small cloud of dust behind us. They were following us! We had to move faster. I kicked my heels into my horse and he lurched ahead.
The sun was setting and soon night would fall. Once it did, there would be no way of escaping the king's men. I would have to find the resistance tonight.
The next hour passed like days. I was ready to give up, and collapse on the side of the road. The horse kept going and I kept kicking, but it seemed to get slower with each step. As if he could sense my anguish, he suddenly bolted forward and I tumbled off his back. My leg got caught in the stirrup and dragged along the ground. My ankle burned with pain and my bones creaked with each turn. I tried to pull myself free, but my strength was gone. I could feel the horse slowing down, but I wasn't strong enough to lift myself. I closed my eyes and prepared for the end.
Suddenly, there was a loud clang and I felt my leg free. I opened my eyes to see the horse running away. Then, two strong arms lifted me into the air.
"It's all right, I've got you," the stranger said. "Please stay still, you're hurt."
"I'm alright," I said, trying to stand. But the man held me firm. "I've got to find the resistance. I need help."
"What happened to you?" he asked.
I looked around and saw we were surrounded by a small group of people. They wore clothes I hadn't seen in years. Their hair was decorated with flowers and feathers. They spoke a language I didn't recognize. "Where am I?"
"You're in the village of Las Morales," the man said. "You're injured and need rest. My name is Jack."
"I don't have time for rest," I said, pulling away from him. But the moment I stood on my ankle, I crumpled back down.
Jack picked me up again. "You can't go anywhere. You'll die out here."
"They'll find me and kill me," I explained. "I have to find the resistance before they do."
"The resistance?" Jack asked. "Who are you?"
"My name is Khaled," I said. "I'm a soldier."
"A soldier?" Jack repeated. "From where?"
"From Egypt," I said. "The king has enslaved my people."
"You must be talking about Nacho," Jack said. "He's been here for decades."
"We have to hurry," I said, pushing myself up. "He'll kill the resistance if we don't stop him."
"Who is this resistance?" Jack asked. "How do you know about them?"
I looked at him, confused. "They are a group of people who are fighting against the king."
"Fighting against... Nacho?" Jack asked. "Why would they do that?"
"Because he is evil," I said. "He killed the queen and took over the kingdom. He has been oppressing everyone for years."
"No wonder you need our help," Jack said. "But how do you know about us? We've hidden from the king for decades. He can't possibly know about us."
"I met a girl," I explained. "She told me where to find you."
"A girl?" he asked. "That's odd."
"Who is she?" I asked.
"Well," he began. "Her name is Alice."
"Alice?" I asked. "She is part of the resistance?"
"No," Jack said. "She's just a girl. She can't fight the king, but she could tell you where to find the resistance."
"Then I must find her!" I said. "Where can I find her?"
"I don't know," he said. "I haven't seen her in months. But I can take you to the resistance. They can help you."
"Thank you, Jack," I said. "I am in your debt."
"We should get going, though," he said. "It's getting dark and the king's men will be looking for you."
"Lead the way," I said.
