Kismet Unravelled: Jane's Hong Kong Mystery
·
Published 3/12/2023Determined and resourceful detective Jane navigates the leafy streets of modern-day Hong Kong, and with the help of her loyal friend Lui, must race against time to uncover the source of a murderous mastermind's enigmatic message and her own inner truth, before their city falls victim to the sinister plot.
“There is a murderer on the loose!” My boss, Chief Inspector Lee, said with excitement in his voice.
“I had heard of a few murders in the last couple weeks but nothing to be concerned about.” I replied.
“The killings are getting closer together and the victims are getting younger. The latest was a 13 year old girl from one of the villages outside of Hong Kong.”
I sighed heavily as I put my cup down. “How many were killed? And how many were children?” I asked him.
“So far there have been six murders in all, four of which were children and two of which were adults.” He said as he started typing away furiously at his keyboard. “All of them were killed with a knife and left with some message written on their chest using what appears to be ink made from blood. The only part that anyone can make out is a picture of some kind of dragon eating its own tail, like this…” He showed me the photo on his computer screen. It looked vaguely familiar but I couldn’t place where I had seen it before so I let it go for now and continued listening to him talk about the case.
“Do we have anything else to go on besides this image? The victims are from different walks of life and there doesn’t seem to be any pattern between them or their families or anything else that we can find?” I asked him hopefully, hoping to get answers soon for once instead of just more questions.
He shook his head no as he kept typing away at his keyboard and said “No, nothing that has turned up so far. But we do have something new today that might help lead us in the right direction… The killer sent me an email telling me he would kill again if we didn't leave him alone by tomorrow morning.” His face was serious when he read the message out loud to me and sounded angry as well but then he lost himself into thought for a moment before continuing, “Which means we have less than 24 hours to figure this out before another child dies and we might never catch this bastard! We need to move quickly!” He yelled angrily as the veins in his neck poked out through his skin while he slammed his fist down onto his desk hard enough to make me jump slightly in my seat next to him. Whatever trace of anger seemed to vanish just as quickly as it appeared though as he regained control over himself but I could see the frustration in his eyes as he turned back towards me and asked “Miss Wong… Do you think you can give us any insight into who might be responsible for these crimes? Any clues at all that you might find in your investigations? Any thoughts you may have on who might be capable of committing such atrocities? Could they be connected somehow? Have you found anything that connects them at all during your investigations? Anything at all could help us notice something important here! Please Miss Wong… This is very important and time is running short! Please don't keep us waiting for an answer! Maybe someone close to you or someone you know might know something or could lead us somewhere useful! Please tell me Miss Wong… Are you sure there is nothing else that you can tell us about these crimes or those responsible for them!? Anything at all could help!! Please Miss Wong, don't keep us waiting any longer!! You must tell me if there are any connections between these crimes or if there are any clues within them or if there is anyone you suspect may be involved!! Please Miss Wong… Tell us anything at all!! Anything will help! Anything at all!!" He screamed at me uncontrollably while tears streamed down his face slowly without stopping.
I took a deep breath before speaking up again, “If it helps, Chief Inspector Lee.. I think they may be connected after all… But not because they knew each other or because they had anything in common… It's more like they are connected because they share something with me… Something that no one else has ever known about before… Only my mother ever knew but now everyone will know too... And now they will know why they died… They died because they had what I wanted the most…" I said softly before continuing, "They died because they were my sisters."
