The dream was as clear as the moonlight on the water.
He could feel the heat of her body next to his, soft and pleasant. The taste of whiskey lingered in his mouth, though he did not remember drinking any. Her hair smelled of lavender and vanilla, the two scents mixing into a unique aroma that smelled like nothing else in the world. Her hands were soft, her skin smooth and unblemished by age. He could smell her perfume now too, a light floral scent that tickled his nose and made him giggle softly. She moved closer to him, pressing her chest against his shoulder and nibbling on his earlobe. He giggled again and she laughed with him, pulling away from him just enough to look him in the eyes. They were sparkling in the moonlight, alive with an energy he had never seen before.
“You’re nervous?” she said softly, leaning in to kiss him. He closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around her waist, returning her kiss with a passion he never knew he had. His heart was racing so hard he could hear it pounding in his ears. “I’ve wanted this for so long…”
She pulled back from the kiss and stared at him longingly. “What do you say? Do you want to go somewhere else?”
Mark took her hand into both of his own, stroking them gently with his thumbs as he smiled at her warmly. “Yes, I do…”
---
Mark awoke with a start, gasping for breath as though he had run ten miles without stopping for air. His mind was racing out of control; flashing images of Alicia’s face invaded every corner of his memory, making it difficult for him to focus on anything else. His cheeks were wet from tears that still flowed down from his eyes freely, even after waking up from the nightmare that haunted him every night for what seemed like years now. The dream felt so real; it was almost like he could reach out and touch her if he tried hard enough. Mark shook his head violently and wiped away the tears from his face violently with both of his hands, desperately trying to put himself back together again after being torn apart while asleep. It was no use; despite trying to calm himself down several times over the course of a few minutes until he felt stable enough to walk across the room without collapsing into hysterics, it was no use. The worst part is that none of it was a dream; she did ask him if they should go somewhere private together… but he said no… because he was too scared… too scared because…
Because she didn’t love him… because she only wanted sex… because she used him! If only I hadn't been so selfish… if only I hadn't been so afraid… if only I had said yes!
Mark remembered their conversation very clearly now: they had been talking about how little time they got to talk anymore since going off to their separate universities far away from each other when she asked him about going somewhere more private than a barroom stool for a few minutes before closing time that night... For some reason Mark didn't answer right away; instead he looked at what little remained of their relationship in front of them on the table between them... He wasn't sure why it happened that way now that he thought about it; perhaps being exhausted from being awake most of the night before after staying up late talking to Alicia online or maybe having one drink too many while they talked earlier had something to do with it... Whatever it was, something stopped him from saying anything right away... As far as reasons go for breaking up with someone, "being tired" doesn't rank too high on any list... But then again who knows? Maybe she would have understood…. No probably not... She's always been super understanding when it came to me... Maybe that's why I'm still sitting here alone all these years later.. Maybe if I had just said something.... Maybe if I wouldn't have been such a coward.... Maybe if I had listened to my heart rather than my head-- My god! What am I thinking!? Why am I trying to blame myself for this!? Why am I trying to make excuses for myself!? This is not my fault! None of it! There is nothing wrong with me! Nothing at all! She's just not interested in me romantically anymore... That's all.. It has nothing to do with me.. Nothing at all.. Nothing at all.. Nothing at all.. Nothing at all.. NOTHING AT ALL!!!
Mark took a deep breath and let out a long exhale, trying to calm his racing heart and the tangled mess of thoughts in his mind. He knew he couldn't blame himself for the way things turned out with Alicia. Relationships were complex, unpredictable beasts, and sometimes they just didn't work out, no matter how much you wanted them to.
But as Mark lie there in the darkness of his bedroom, his mind wouldn't let go of what might have been. Images of Alicia's smiling face flooded his thoughts, accompanied by a heavy, suffocating sense of regret. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had missed out on something incredible, something that could have changed the course of his life.
Unable to bear the weight of these thoughts any longer, Mark swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up. He needed to clear his head, to get out of this suffocating space filled with memories and "what ifs." He slipped on a pair of worn sneakers and headed out the door, not quite sure where he was going, but knowing he needed to be anywhere but here.
The cool night air embraced him as he walked through the empty streets. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a pale glow upon the world below. Mark let his feet guide him, his mind lost in a whirlwind of emotions. He wandered aimlessly through the city, passing by familiar landmarks that now seemed foreign and distant. Every street corner seemed to hold a memory, a reminder of what he had lost.
As he turned a corner, a gentle hum filled the air. Mark followed the sound, his curiosity leading him to a dimly lit café tucked away on a side street. The café was empty, save for a lone figure sitting at a table near the window. Mark approached cautiously, feeling a strange sense of familiarity wash over him.
The figure looked up and their eyes met. It was Alicia. Her eyes sparkled in the dim light, filled with a mixture of surprise and warmth. Mark's heart skipped a beat as he took in her presence, unsure of what to say or how to react.
She stood up, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Mark," she whispered, her voice carrying a melody he thought he'd never hear again. "I never thought I'd see you here."
He found his voice, though it emerged as barely a whisper. "What are you doing here?"
Alicia's smile deepened as she stepped closer. "I saw a light in the window and couldn't resist. Something drew me here, back to this place, to you."
Mark's mind raced, a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. Could this be a second chance, an opportunity to make things right? Or was it simply a cruel twist of fate, a temporary respite from the pain he had been carrying?
Alicia reached out a hand, her touch sending shivers down his spine. "I've missed you, Mark. I've missed us. Can we...can we start again?"
The question hung in the air, heavy and pregnant with possibility. Mark gazed into Alicia's eyes, searching for the answer he so desperately sought. And in that moment, he knew. He knew that despite the pain, the regret, and the uncertainty, he couldn't deny the connection he still felt with Alicia.
With a flicker of hesitation, Mark reached out and took her hand in his. "Yes," he whispered, his heart pounding with a mix of fear and excitement. "Let's start over."
And in that café, bathed in the soft glow of the moon, Mark and Alicia embarked on a new chapter—one filled with hope, forgiveness, and the promise of a love that never truly died.
